Job description

General Accountability:
Purpose and Scope
Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, and taking direction from the Horticulture Coordinator, Arboriculture Technician and/or
Parks staff, the Summer Student(s) performs tasks assigned in the day-to-day operation of horticulture, arboriculture and
parks maintenance. The main focus for this position will be working in the City gardens, green spaces, cemeteries and
parks.

Nature and Scope of Work
Working with the Horticulture Coordinator, Horticulturists or Arboriculture Technician, the incumbent may perform the
following activities: planting, transplanting, fertilizing, irrigating, cultivating, mulch, weeding, and basic pruning of shrubs
and plants; fertilizing, tree ringing, and watering of trees, plants and shrubs; and cleanup of litter and debris.

Necessary Qualifications
Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of horticulture practices.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and safe work procedures.
  • Basic understanding of pruning practices and plant healthcare techniques.
Skills:
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Safe work habits and practices.

Abilities:
• Ability to multi-task, work under tight timelines, and respond to rapid and constant changes in direction and

priorities.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, stamina and ability to perform the work.
Education:
• Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, and produce and maintain a clean driver’s abstract, as per
City policy.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time curriculum of an accredited university or technical college for the

2024/2025 academic year (proof of full-time enrollment is required prior to start date)

Preferred Criteria
• Ability to perform well in public forums.
  • Courses in horticulture or arboriculture.
Unusual Working Conditions
• Will be exposed to adverse weather conditions in performance of job functions.
  • Physically demanding work.
