Board authority is delegated to District staff through the Superintendent.The Superintendent is entrusted with the responsibility of improving student achievement, ensuring that the organization, administration, supervision, and evaluation of all educational programs, business, and operations in the District respond to this responsibility. The Superintendent is accountable to the Board, which represents the public trust, students, staff, and the communities that are served by New West Schools. The Superintendent is also accountable to the Minister of Education and is bound to ensure compliance with all legal, fiscal and regulatory statutes and requirements in the Province. The Superintendent is responsive to multiple partner groups throughout the District’s communities.This is an outstanding opportunity for a passionate and visionary education leader to take a thriving school district to the next level. Building on the strength of continued improvement and excellence in student achievement and equity, solid relations with the Board, educators, staff, parents, students, government, and community organizations, the Superintendent should know how to improve system performance at the district level. With an engaged Board of Education and a sound strategic plan, the Superintendent should be experienced with evidence-based decision making and understand how to engage with multiple communities in a fast-growing, complex district. Responsibilities Assist the Board in developing policy and arranging for review and revision of these policies as required; Recommend an organizational structure that will ensure that educational and administrative functions are carried out and that all resources are used efficiently and effectively; Recommend programs to the Board that are consistent with district and Ministry goals; Lead the recruitment, selection, assignment, and evaluation of all staff to facilitate effective performance; Supervise the preparation and submission of the district’s annual operating and capital budgets; Leads the development and implementation of the strategic planning process; Involves the Board appropriately (Board identification of priorities and key results, and final Board approval of the plan in conjunction with the annual budget); and Reports at least annually on results achieved. Focuses on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and ensures that students, faculty, and staff are provided with a safe and caring environment that encourages respectful and responsible behavior; Ensures the school district operates in a fiscally responsible manner, including adherence to recognized accounting procedures; Prepares and presents the budget which reflects Board priorities; Supervise plans, programs, and services in all schools and departments; Encourage programs and practices that develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in the system; Demonstrates effective organizational skills; Reports to the Minister with respect to matters identified in and required by the School Act and provincial legislation; Takes appropriate actions to ensure open, transparent, positive internal and external communications are developed and maintained; Takes appropriate actions to ensure parents have a high level of satisfaction with the services provided and the responsiveness of the school district within policy and budgetary constraints; Maintains effective relationships within the school district and the community served; Practices leadership in a manner that is viewed positively and has the support of those with whom the Superintendent works most directly in carrying out the directives of the Board and the Minister.THE PERSON The Superintendent should be a refined leader and educator who is experienced with the complexities of large, public-sector organizations. Possessing an inclusive and transparent leadership style, they build engagement by creating a true team environment, leveraging the expertise and strengths that exist within the District. The Superintendent is decisive, and possesses policy, systems, and planning expertise to assist New West Schools with complex decision-making, as well as guiding staff through challenging initiatives.Required Qualifications The ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications and experience requirements: A minimum of a master’s degree in a relevant discipline; Executive level leadership and deep operational management experience in a public school district; Ability to lead diverse, high performing teams; displays courageous leadership and drives accountability; Proven track record developing student-focused initiatives and supporting staff throughout the District; Experience developing and leading capacity and facilities planning processes is an asset; Fluency with information technology, computerized financial systems, and excellent analytical skills; Experience and alignment with supporting Indigenous learners, implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, and implementing Indigenous ways of knowing across the District; Proven ability to build positive relationships with the Board of Education, community, government officials, Indigenous partners, and partner groups; Exemplary interpersonal and people development skills at the individual and group level; and Experience in media relations, communications and public speaking, and conflict resolution.New Westminster Schools welcomes those who have demonstrated a commitment to upholding the values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and will assist the organization to expand its capacity for diversity.
