Job description

Boreal Veterinary Centre —a brand new 24/7 veterinary emergency and referral centre in northwest Edmonton — is seeking the right people for the right roles in our hospital.
The Surgery Animal Care Assistant (ACA) role is perfect for a person looking to build a long-term career in veterinary medicine.
The purpose of this role is to provide gold standard nursing and comfort care to our patients with clear and effective client communication. It is an essential role that supports our medical team.
The ACA will work under the direct supervision of the Registered Veterinary Technologist in charge of the patient’s medical care. The ACA’s daily activities will include nutrition, exercise, ensuring patients are clean, providing environmental enrichment and facilitating family visits. There is a heavy emphasis on quality of care.
The perfect candidate will:
  • Have a high school diploma.
  • Be able to lift 50lbs (22kg), able to stand for long periods of time (10 hours).
  • Responsible for surgery room set-up, clean up, and quick turn over between procedures.
  • Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical supplies.
  • Be compassionate and possess patience.
  • Have a strong desire to pursue an animal related post-secondary education.
  • Have a basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Have experience with gentle handling techniques.
  • Possess strong communication skills.
  • Have a desire for ongoing learning and be willing to mentor and support others.
  • Report problems or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
  • Operate, clean, and perform departmental routine maintenance on all equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance tests to ensure that the sterilization process is effective
About Boreal Veterinary Centre
Operating out of a brand new 15,000-square-foot facility, our state-of-the-art Centre includes nine examination rooms, two comfort rooms, a large open treatment room, an ICU, three large fully-equipped surgery suites, an endoscopy suite, two radiology suites, a chemotherapy ward, and CT scan. We are home of northern Alberta’s first radioactive iodine therapy ward and have a user-friendly, cloud-based, paperless system to ensure accessibility and flexibility of communication throughout our hospital. Our hospital is situated on 2.2 acres of land that includes a pond and a walking path.
