Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), part of Ontario Health, is responsible for the coordination of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. Our mandate includes increasing public awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation, education of health care professionals, and ensuring a safe and effective donation and transplant system in Ontario. Reporting to the Manager of Surgical Recovery Services at Ontario Health, the Surgical Perfusionist will be responsible for providing professional services in a manner that is consistent with the mission and values of TGLN, OH. The Surgical Perfusionist is passionate about organ donation and is dedicated to achieving optimal outcomes through effective collaboration with all involved donation and transplant stakeholders.
The Surgical Perfusionist will work alongside the transplant recovery surgeons intraoperatively during Death Determination by Circulatory Criteria (DCC) heart and Abdominal Normothermic Regional Perfusion (A-NRP) donor recoveries to ensure the donated heart and abdominal organ(s) remain viable for transplantation. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, operation of ex-vivo heart perfusion and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) devices; monitoring and case management of organ function intraoperatively; administration of various types of blood products and medications; and equipment management.
The Surgical Perfusionist will travel throughout the province of Ontario, nationally, and/or internationally to assist in the surgical recovery of organs for transplantation.
Here is what you will be doing:
  • Support the surgical recovery of hearts from DCC heart donors and abdominal organs from A-NRP donors.
  • Be available on a rotational on-call basis (including weekends and holidays).
  • Ensure safe and efficient preparation for and management of cardiopulmonary bypass and related cardiopulmonary support modalities for adult patients.
  • In consultation with the transplant recovery surgeons, administer various anesthetic and medical gases, other related pharmaceuticals, blood and blood products and various crystalloid solutions.
  • Able to provide technical cardiopulmonary support under intensive care unit (ICU) setting to adult patients requiring extra corporeal life support or long-term ventricular assist device.
  • Ensure duties affecting the safety and well-being of patients are carried out in accordance to Recommended Guidelines for The Standards of Practice of Clinical Perfusion and the Code of Ethical Conduct of the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (C.S.C.P).
  • Perform technical duties in support of the DCC heart and A-NRP recovery such as medical chart review, blood draw and physical examination of the deceased donors, preparation and maintenance of related supplies and equipment, as well as other technical responsibilities.
  • Work closely with TGLN’s Provincial Resource Centre and front-line healthcare professionals throughout the process with respect to any required information and support.
  • Review documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established processes.
  • Oversee and ensure a sterile environment during the organ retrieval process; prepare instruments, tubing, perfusion and preservation solutions as well as sterile packaging materials.
  • Assist with projects, development of processes and documentation.
  • Ensure all surgical related documentation is recorded in the donor chart, reviews for data integrity, completeness and adherence to TGLN standards.
  • Ensure surgical supplies and equipment are maintained within specified parameters.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the role, as required.
Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in health-related field required
  • Master’s Degree in health-related field (Preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years current critical care experience required
  • Minimum 1-year cardiovascular/medical surgical experience required
  • Current General Class (Practicing) Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario, or Member in good standing with C.S.R.T. and/or R.T.S.O, or Certification (or eligibility of certification) with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP)/or American Board of Clinical Perfusion (ABCP), or foreign trained physicians (MD, MBBS) with demonstrated experience in perfusion or cardiovascular surgery.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Specialized knowledge of extracorporeal physiology and mechanics preferred
  • Superior critical thinking, enhanced conflict resolution, and the ability to collaborate inter-professionally with a wide variety of health care disciplines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to work various shifts as required
  • Positive work and attendance record are essential
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
  • Specialty training in other applied areas would be an asset – e.g. research, leadership, quality improvement
  • A valid class G driver's license without restrictions and reliable vehicle is required
  • A valid Passport which allows travel to the United States is required (note: a travel US VISA is not sufficient)
Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

Rate of Pay: $90,000 to $112,397.67 per annum
