About Our Opportunity
As the Survey Technician 2(A)-(B), you will be responsible for supporting the survey program of the Regional Services Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables.
 
Primary Accountabilities
You will assist with the preparation and generation of detailed drawings, charts, graphs and plans and will interpret aerial photographs and survey data results in order to determine property lines and advise on boundary locations. You will also provide technical support and advice to assist senior Survey Technicians and/or professional Surveyors, supervise and review the field work of summer casual and student workers and provide technical oversight and training in field procedures and appropriate land survey techniques to ensure compliance with departmental standards.
You will investigate, establish or re-establish and maintain boundary lines and operate survey instruments (including but not limited to electronic and peripheral equipment, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and/or conventional line of sight technology) to determine precise measurements. You will regularly operate a variety of specialized tools for clearing underbrush, limbing, felling with power saws and other tools for unobstructed instrument sighting at ground level and for boundary maintenance, uncovering survey evidence using a metal detector, pick shovel, spade or other tools and setting wooden stakes and iron pins into the ground as directed.
The Technologist will participate in all aspects of the survey team.
This position will report to the Surveyor 3.
 
Qualifications and Experience
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have completed a Diploma in Surveying Technology.
As the ideal candidate you have demonstrated experience (or educational experience) in conducting technical
reviews of field surveys and survey plan submissions, drafting plans, researching historical documentation, and
compiling records for investigation purposes.
You are able to use your knowledge of survey law, land transaction requirements, and survey requirements, to
continuously look to identify process roadblocks and help streamline product delivery by improving efficiencies,
building transparency and communicating effectively with all stakeholders.
You have demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of software used to digitally transform and shape spatial
data such as AutoCAD, ArcMap, GNSS processing programs, C&G Survey, and transformation/conversion
software. You have an understanding and training in map projections, error analysis, geodetic computations,
reference data, geoids, ellipsoids, coordinate transformations and other geospatial factors.
To be successful in this role, you will have a strong attention to detail and excellent interpersonal, verbal and
written communication skills as well as tact and diplomacy in order to advise and consult a range of audiences, to
interview and extract information from landowners, to resolve issues cooperatively with internal and external
stakeholders and to testify as an expert witness on matters related to legal surveys. You are a self-starter, detail-oriented and able to work independently and in a team environment.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written
examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
Travel within assigned region for field work; can include use of ATVs, snowmobiles, boats, and helicopters.
Work outside extensively in varied weather conditions.
 
Additional Information
A valid drivers license is required. This position will travel extensively year-round throughout assigned region for field work. You may be required to operate department vehicles including off road vehicles, boats and equipment, work in remote areas and travel long distances on foot over rough terrain during field work activities while carrying equipment.
This role will require the successful candidate to be able to cut down trees, as and when required in the performance of their duties. Therefore ability to safely operate related equipment i.e. chainsaw and other
tools, is required.

Pay Grade:  TE 18 - TE 20  
Salary Range:  $1,855.00 - $2,358.22 Bi-Weekly
