Position Title: Tax Compliance Analyst

Team and Location: Finance -  Calgary, AB

Position Summary:

The Tax Compliance Analyst will be responsible for a variety of compliance and support functions.  They will assist in the monthly reporting process, including acquiring data used in the returns, completing required tax returns for sales and fuel tax, and assisting with projects. This role would be good for a self-starter who is looking to expand and grow their indirect tax knowledge. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with gathering information for tax returns 
    • Run reports and ensure they are correct
    • Investigate and escalate issues
    • Ensure reports are provided to EY in a timely manner
    • Escalate issues to manager or senior manager
  • Prepare assigned commodity tax returns (sales tax, fuel tax, and related reporting) 
    • Prepare all assigned reports, payments and file on time to the government
    • Reconcile to the GL and investigate variances
    • Reach out to the business regarding any issues to fix
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for the monthly reports, returns, filing, and reconciliation processes 
    • Create any missing documentation for compliance or running reports
    • Create documentation for tax returns that currently don’t have any
    • Update documentation with new processes or changes
    • Recommend process improvements on current processes, assist in implement and update documentation
  • Analyse and reconcile monthly tax returns to the general ledger, investigate risks and resolve issues 
    • Clean up outstanding issues from current and previous months
    • Follow-up with the business on previous communication
    • Reconcile amounts outstanding amounts
  • Develop and enhance knowledge of indirect tax 
    • Be inquisitive and ask questions regarding sales and fuel tax
    • Work with senior accountants and managers to gain indirect tax knowledge
    • Read and understand government legislation
  • Assist with tax compliance tasks and special projects as required 
    • Assist with projects such as audits
    • Assist with quarter CSOX requirements such as tax rate table checks
    • Assist with any other project such as exemption or automation as they arise

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Completion of a Business degree with an Accounting/Finance concentration  
  • CPA designation completed or in progress considered an asset  
  • 2-5 years of experience in an accounting role  
  • Understanding of indirect tax reporting requirements considered an asset  
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills  
  • Experience with JDE or a similar ERP system  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills  
  • Strong work ethic and eagerness to increase knowledge  
  • Ability to work both independently and within a small team environment  
  • Enthusiastic with a desire to learn
