About Potash
The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon.


BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.


Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages.

Purpose
Reporting to the Manager Tax, the Specialist Tax contributes to the management of corporate, regional, and international tax matters, and attendance to BHP’s tax obligations and external reporting requirements. This position provides tax expertise, advising internal stakeholders on tax-related matters.
About the Role
  • Assists in coordinating, preparing, and reviewing Federal and other jurisdictional tax returns
  • Conducts tax research and analysis to implement tax advice
  • Ensures that tax accounting, forecasting, and reporting activities are performed in a timely, accurate and efficient manner
  • Assists in responding to and engaging with tax auditors
  • Develops relationships with key stakeholders within the businesses
  • Prepares and where necessary, reviews complex tax calculations to perform modelling and analytics for tax compliance, reporting, and planning projects
  • Analyzes new tax legislation and other tax developments and announcements as they impact BHP’s investments in the region and globally
  • Participates in cross-functional working groups to provide conclusions and recommendations to management
  • Provides guidance on acquisitions, divestments, and restructures
  • Reviews fiscal terms, contracts, and commercial proposals
  • Aids in the efficient and effective use of 1SAP, OneSource Tax Provision Software, and other local software if applicable
Work Location
Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.


BHP offers domestic relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. Benefits offered as part of the relocation program include (but are not limited to) new home purchase assistance, temporary accommodations, home finding trip and a resettlement allowance.
About You
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Professional qualification (CPA/ICAA, Bar member) or similar tax qualifications, either completion or currently pursuing will be an added advantage

Experience & Technical Competencies:
  • Experience working in public accounting and/or industry
  • Experience with Federal and State tax compliance, including international tax planning is an asset
  • Desire to learn and understand US Federal and State tax regulations
  • Completion of CPA Canada In-Depth Tax or a Master's of Tax would be an asset
  • Experience in tax accounting under IFRS and/or GAAP
  • Working knowledge of SAP, OneSource Income Tax, or OneSource Tax Provision software will be an asset
  • Mining industry experience is an added advantage
