Technical Education Manager

We directly engage with clean energy advocates, policymakers, and regulators to advance technical solutions to clean energy deployment, accelerated fossil fuel retirement, and enhanced grid reliability. As GridLab embarks on ambitious organizational growth and expansion of our mission, scope, and breadth of engagement across the country, we are seeking a Technical Education Manager to help expand our impact.

The Technical Education Manager is responsible for communicating GridLab’s thought leadership and program work on critical clean energy issues, with an emphasis on grid reliability. Our technical assistance includes expert testimony, modeling, analysis, and policy support in integrated resource planning, resource adequacy, grid modernization, and electrification proceedings; engagement in NERC, FERC and RTO activities in support of clean energy and grid transformation; transmission planning; and work on power systems modeling, market design and grid operating practices.

GridLab collaborates with leading clean energy organizations, such as RMI, ESIG, Advanced Energy United, EPRI, NRDC, and others to develop critical thought leadership and advance the transition to 100% clean electricity. The Technical Education Manager will lead all our education efforts, which are focused on educating key stakeholders in the energy transition, such as regulators and policymakers, as well as lead our communications, which includes communicating with partners, funders, the press, and other key stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Technical Education Manager is responsible for leading GridLab’s communications and education efforts. Core responsibilities include: 

• Serve as the key GridLab liaison on media communications, working closely with partner organizations such as Climate Nexus, Energy Foundation, Resource Media, Sierra Club, NRDC and others. The position would be highly collaborative and primarily supporting other organizations communications efforts. 
• Educate policymakers, regulators, journalists, and other key stakeholders on the reliability benefits of clean energy, and how we maintain reliability through the grid transition. These education sessions could be through presenting at conferences (such as NARUC, OMS, MACRUC) or in direct meetings with key policymakers. 
• Work with Advanced Energy United, RMI, RAP and other regulator education organizations to educate key regulators on reliability, transmission, and other key energy transition topics.
• Respond to journalist requests with either direct quotes, or connecting with the right GridLab expert or staff.
• Communicate and distill key energy transition topics through blog posts, social media posts, and other communication means to educate and inform key stakeholders. Work with the authors of the original material to produce digestible material for policymakers. Draft technical summaries and other communication material.
• Represent GridLab or coordinate GridLab representation at technical venues, Commission workshops, or similar venues. 
• Develop written material to support GridLab’s technical assistance work, including analysis of recent projects, whitepapers, and report support.
• Regularly communicate to our network of experts, advocates, and funders key wins, industry developments, and relevant GridLab work.
• Stay abreast of key developments in the energy transition, reviewing trade press and other relevant materials.
• Work with staff to develop metrics to more clearly articulate GridLab’s value and successes.
• Support grant and funding proposal writing, clearly articulating GridLab’s strategy and vision, as well as relevant programmatic successes, challenges, and opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Expertise in energy technology, markets, and policy
• Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills. 
• Ability to tell a compelling story about complex topics.
• Self-starter who can work with Executive Director and the GridLab team to set and execute priorities
• Excellent time management, project design and management skills
• Passion for clean energy with an appreciation for linking technical knowledge with policy and advocacy 
• 5+ years of professional experience

• Experience working with clean energy advocacy groups, policymakers, or regulators
• Experience with publications and technical reports, conference presentations/proceedings 
• Experience moderating panels, experience presenting at technical or regulatory workshops
• Experience in journalism and/or technical writing.

POSITION DETAILS

LOCATION AND COMPENSATION

GridLab is based in Berkeley, CA at the David Brower Center. Our staff currently splits time between the office and work-from-home, with regularly scheduled on-site meetings. While our preference is for this position to be based in our Berkeley office, remote candidates will be considered. 

GridLab offers competitive compensation including full benefits, a fun and engaging work environment, and a flexible vacation policy. Some travel is anticipated, although we fully support leveraging virtual venues where feasible. Start date is flexible, earlier is preferred. This is a full-time salaried position with an expected salary range of $85,000 – $135,000 depending on skills, experience, and geographic location. Part-time applicants will also be considered.
