Job description

Acadian Seaplants Limited is hiring a Tender Boat Operator based in Western Nova Scotia.

The Tender Boat Operator is responsible for providing support to the Mechanical Harvester Operator for the operation of the Mechanical Harvester. The Mechanical Harvester is a boat designed for harvesting seaweed. The Tender Boat Operator supports the Mechanical Harvester Operator in the safe, efficient, and sustainable harvest of seaweed.

Your Role:

In this role you will:

  • Operate the Tender Boat (an open deck boat) in the indicated areas.
  • Tow seaweed bags from the harvesting site to the unloading site
  • Complete regular inspections and basic maintenance of the Tender Boat to prevent mechanical breakdowns and downtime.
  • Ensure adequate spare parts are available to ensure maximum harvest time and reduce downtime due to break downs.
  • Follow all guidelines for the mechanical harvester as instructed and required
  • Work with the Resource Manager to establish and maintain logistics planning to assure timely take out and best practices with respect to resource handling.
  • Be able to operate the Mechanical Harvester when necessary (e.g. back up to the Mechanical Harvester Operator)
  • Ensure all harvesting activities are carried out in accordance with company procedures, policies and manage the natural resource to maintain sustainability. Ensure that all operational requirements are in place to produce the required budget volumes of raw material.
  • Support the company’s vision and policies regarding Health & Safety, Corporate Culture, Environmental Management and the Progressive Excellence Program by displaying the appropriate behaviors and leadership towards meeting the company’s objectives in these areas.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Experience working on commercial and/or fishing boats
  • Experience operating machinery
  • Experience operating crane considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pleasure Craft Operator (PCOC) card
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) card considered an asset

Working Conditions

The Tender Boat Operator will spend a significant amount of time during the season on the coastal shores and on the water. Work may involve lifting of materials and equipment of up to 100 lbs. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to ensure safety on land and on the water. In addition, much of the harvesting work is dependent on tides and tide schedules, thus flexibility and rigor are required in a daily work schedule. This is not a regular day to day office job.
