Job Summary:
Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. is looking for a highly skilled Terminal Manager to join our team out of our Nanaimo terminal. As the Terminal Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the operations and overall management of our terminal. You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective movement of freight while maintaining exceptional customer service, meeting operational goals, and maintaining a positive working environment and culture. This position will report directly to the Regional Manager – Vancouver Island, who reports up to the Director of Operations.

Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada.
Responsibilities:
  • Operations Management:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the terminal, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
    • Manage terminal activities, including dock operations, load planning, dispatching, and driver scheduling, to optimize productivity and minimize delays.
    • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.
    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless coordination of operations and timely resolution of any issues or challenges.
    • Daily review of trailer banks, terminal depart time, driver’s log, employee hours and overtime, trailer close time, trailer depart times, trailer weights/load factors, and investigating and correcting manifesting issues.
    • Daily review of undelivered freight, unmanifested freight, adjusted pick-up reports.
    • Participate in weekly meetings with Management.
    • Filling in for holiday coverage in different departments when needed.
    • Oversee Equipment, Building and yard maintenance.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Lead, train, and motivate a team of terminal staff, including drivers, dispatchers, and office personnel.
    • Set performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance evaluations.
    • Foster a positive work environment and culture that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
    • Develop and implement training programs to enhance employee skills and knowledge.
    • Build and maintain a strong working relationship with the Union leadership in the terminal and the region.
  • Customer Service:
    • Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction and ensure that customer needs are met promptly and effectively.
    • Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
    • Collaborate with the sales team to identify opportunities for business growth and development.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Enforce compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and applicable laws.
    • Promote a safe working environment.
  • Financial Management:
    • Manage terminal budget and expenses, seeking opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

Required Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements in the transportation industry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and handle occasional travel requirements.

Training and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 5 years of management experience required. Those with experience managing a union environment will be given preference.
  • Transportation experience is an asset.
  • AS400 experience is an asset.
  • Experience with transportation technology is preferred.
