Reporting to the Construction Supervisor, the Traffic Signals Technician will play a key role in the construction of new traffic control devices (Traffic Signals, pedestrian corridors, traffic monitoring cameras), or modifications to existing traffic control devices. Primary duties include:

  • Undertake detailed field inspections throughout multiple projects to ensure all work complies to City of Calgary specifications.

  • Maintain coordination between the field and office throughout the development of all related traffic control devices.

  • Recover moneys through stock issue and transfer, and initiate material requisitions.

  • Review cost of projects and identify over/under expenditures.

  • Verify all quantities installed on site for payment purposes.

  • Perform post construction inspections of each project and monthly environmental inspections documenting deficiencies and communicating between contractor and Project Manager.

  • Record, prepare and distribute meeting minutes.

  • Conduct management of job folders, monitor quantities and materials, generate reports, conduct investigations, and document test results. 
  • Perform video inspection of underground conduits to ensure installation is free of damage and debris, locate stub-outs and compile reports of investigation findings.

  • Conduct field investigations of existing infrastructure including Property Damage Occurrence Report (PDOR) and prepare reports for Engineering design group.

  • Prepare custom sign manufacturer orders and coordinate the installation.

  • Track inventory of the used material in storage area. Monitor incoming and outgoing items and coordinate recycling of used material.


 
 
Qualifications 

  • A completed 2-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology and at least 3 years of related experience in areas such as traffic operations and/or utility construction.

  • Experience working in the field with contractors is required.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) is required.

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending. The use of a personal vehicle may be required.

  • ArcGIS experience would be considered an asset.

  • A Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is an asset.

  • Success in this position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, effective planning and organizing abilities, high attention to details, ability to take good initiative and self-motivation. 

Working Conditions: Employees will be required to work in all types of weather (rain, snow, heat or extreme cold) with part time office environment.

  • An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.  
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis.
