JOB CLASSIFICATION: Transition Worker

JOB RATE: as established in the Collective Bargaining Agreement

NORMAL HOURS OF WORK: 36 hours per week

START DATE: ASAP

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Post secondary education (degree/diploma in social work or related field) and/or three to five years of group and individual counselling or crisis support work in a related field
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer software
  • Knowledge of community resources to assist sexually assaulted and abused women and a feminist perspective on the political & social issues surrounding women’s issues, sexual assault, rape & VAW
  • Experience in group facilitation, in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, and in crisis response
  • Ability to perform with minimal day to day supervision, and to work individually, collaboratively & effectively within a team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a busy environment with accuracy and efficiency
  • Ability to maintain an impartial and non-judgmental attitude
  • Ability to be punctual and consistent in attendance
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities, to work shift work/flexible hours, to learn new skills, and to adapt to a changing environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, organizational, problem solving, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid first aid certification

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

In keeping with WH Mission and Statement of Principles, the Transition Worker is responsible for providing referrals, information, and support to abused women in the community, and the Shelter, through individual and group format. The goal of the Transition Worker is to empower women in making their own choices and decisions as they move toward a non-violent lifestyle, by connecting women to the necessary community supports, such as housing, legal aid, income support, job training, court support, and health and wellness services. The Transition Worker assists in the development of this community program, implements the program, and works closely with community members. The Transition Worker is also directly responsible for co-facilitating all of the self-esteem groups, and the development and implementation of a weekly peer support lifestyles program.
