As a student, you will build lasting relationships with industry leaders, and contribute to work that will build and strengthen your skill sets. Primary duties include:
  • Tree data collection using iPad, ArcGIS online and ArcGIS desktop. Data collected could include:

  • Tree species identification, Soil type and moisture readings, tree condition, tree size, tree growth conditions, and tree vault information.

  • Map the location of tree trenches and soil cell technology; assess the health of trees in existing trenches.

  • Collect data on any other physical or natural attribute related to a Parks asset or Parks sites, like boulevard or planting site width, planting location type, etc.

  • Utilize tree identification skills to update inventory on public lands.

  • Perform GIS analysis and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on data collected as directed by supervisor.

  • Perform statistical analysis on data collected as directed by supervisor.

  • Create written summary reports, including combination of maps, graphs, and written qualitative comparisons.

  • Perform various other projects towards tree establishment, and mutually assist the Invasive Pest Management students in location or preventing invasive tree pests.

 
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a diploma or degree program in Biological Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Horticulture, Geography, Botany, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Ecological Restoration, Engineering, Surveying, or a related program.

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online is required.
  • A valid class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and the use of personal vehicle.

  • Experience with data collection and mapping will be considered an asset.

  • Native and invasive plant identification and surveying skills, and experience with invasive plant management and restoration, will be considered assets.

  • The ability to work collaboratively as well as independently and have strong communication and research skills.

  • Ability to multitask, and complete work assignments in a timely manner is required.

 
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in school on a full-time basis with the intent to return to school full-time in the Fall of 2024.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • If invited to an interview, you will be asked to provide an unofficial transcript or an enrollment verification letter (indicating the program and year you are currently completing).
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
