Position: Veterinary Technologist
Department: Neurology
Reports to: Technician Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible primarily for Neurology patient care including taking radiographs, preparing patients for procedures, following treatment plans, dispensing, and administering drugs, monitoring vital signs and overall patient assessment. Communication with clients and referring family veterinarians is an integral part of this role. Both client communication and hands-on patient care are conducted under the direct supervision of the Neurology specialist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the Neurology service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively
- Must have or be able to develop competency in performing general anesthesia independently
- Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
- Calculates, dispenses and administers medications at the direction of the Specialist on the case
- Ensures that supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the Neurology service.
- Participates in daily communication with clients
- Ensures that procedures, medications etc. are accurately documented on Smartflow sheets in advance of daily invoicing
- Responsible for documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted in a timely and efficient manner to staff in Wards, ICU, and to other Neurology staff who may be involved in individual cases
- Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained, and that maintenance is documented.
- Keeps Neurology procedure areas clean and organized
- Actively participate in and successfully complete company provided sedation/GA training program, and all in house CE, as offered and/or scheduled
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to recognize and establish priorities within the Neurology service
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to remain calm in emergencies
- Demonstrated computer skills
- Strong desire to learn and excel within the profession
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists
- Demonstrated skills, experience and training that would qualify the individual for a position of responsibility within the Neurology service
- General anesthetic background is an asset
WORKING HOURS
- Either 4*10-hour shifts or 5*8-hour shifts per week
- The successful candidate must also be available for on-call shifts, which may include Saturdays
- As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you, or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four-hour operating day of the hospital, including weekends and holidays
