AccessAbility Services provides and coordinates services and programs that enable students with disabilities to maximize their educational potential and ensure that all students with disabilities can freely and actively participate in all facets of University life. Your opportunity:
As one of the Volunteer Resources and Accommodations Assistants, you will be the first point of contact for students visiting the AccessAbility Services Office, as well as on-line. You will triage needs depending on urgency, set up appointments with Disability Consultants, and provide information, instruction and follow-up regarding services. You will report into the Volunteer Resources and Accommodations Coordinator and work closely with all members of the the AccessAbility Services team. You will act as a central communication link between the users of the service, AccessAbility Services staff and internal and external providers.
AccessAbility Services facilitates disability related accommodations for students, including the volunteer notetaking program; test and exam supports; arranging computerized notetaking; real-time captioning; American Sign Language Interpreters, multiple format educational materials, adaptive furniture and accessible equipment. You will be responsible for providing detailed information on accommodation services and supports to students; administration support and front-line services; liaising with Course Instructors, Professors, Teaching Assistants and staff to ensure students receive supports pertaining to their accommodation needs (e.g. notetaking services, real-time captioning); arranging reserved seating, sign language interpreters and coordinating delivery of ergonomic furniture with the University's Facilities Management Department or appropriate external service providers; maintaining the database and running reports (e.g. statistics, annual reporting requirements) and assisting with the development, implementation and maintenance of volunteer/student support programs.
Your responsibilities will include:
-Acting as first point of contact for general enquiries (including enquiries by email and phone)
-Disseminating program and/or service information (e.g. accommodation services, promotional/outreach materials, disability related financial awards)
-Providing detailed information on note taking and/or interpretation service activities
-Scheduling appointments and checking the eligibility of students to access services
-Coordinating appropriate accommodation needs for students
-Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
-Verifying the accuracy and completeness of information
-Maintaining a database (e.g. student volunteer requests, volunteer data, documenting student interactions)
 
Essential Qualifications:
-Bachelor's Degree in a related disability field or acceptable combination of education and experience
-Minimum three years experience in an administrative role working directly with persons with disabilities
-Demonstrated understanding of disability related issues
-Must have advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and an aptitude for learning new computer applications. Must have experience working with databases.
-Ability to respond calmly and efficiently by providing support and general referrals to individuals in distress
-Must have excellent communication skills (verbal, written and active listening) and committed to providing excellent customer service
-Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, problem-solving, tact and professionalism
-Sound organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy, ability to set priorities and anticipate the needs of team members
-Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information and disseminate information in a sensitive manner in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)
-Ability to work effectively in a student-centered environment, as well as work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
-Expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
Assets (Nonessential):
-Working experience in a post-secondary environment
-Experience recruiting, coordinating, supervising and training volunteers
