The Opportunity

The City of St. John's is presently hiring for the full-time temporary position of Wastewater Maintenance Operator I, under the direction of the Supervisor, Wastewater Treatment, Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Facility, performs a variety of skilled tasks in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; performs related work as required.

Accountabilities

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Wastewater Treatment, Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Facility, performs a variety of skilled tasks in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; performs related work as required.
The Wastewater Maintenance Operator will ensure all plant processes are operating properly by reviewing and interpreting computer data, visually inspecting equipment and facilities and identifying and troubleshooting problems. The Wastewater Maintenance Operator will have a strong mechanical aptitude and analytical thought processes which will enable him/her to quickly identify, investigate and rectify process abnormalities. Responsibilities include:
Operate, maintain and repair equipment such as screens, grit removal system, screw augers, various pumps, complex piping systems, sludge centrifuge equipment, polymer batching systems, biogas utilization for thermal energy, control gates, valves, air compressors/blowers, strainers, HVAC systems, hot water heating boilers and heating systems, diesel generators, fans, chlorination/de-chlorination equipment, hose and clean large tanks and vessels and perform housekeeping duties as required. Monitor, interpret and analyze relevant pressures, flows, levels, temperatures and densities in all areas of the plant through SCADA system
and thorough first-hand inspection.

  • Perform preventative maintenance programs on all plant equipment.
  • Complete data collection reports and interpret results.
  • Perform changeover of equipment
  • Conduct tours of the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Facility
  • Complete or assist in shipping/receiving and connection/disconnection of chlorine ton
cylinders.
  • Assist in commissioning of new equipment.
  • Work in confined spaces wearing a respirator and Self-Contained or Supplied-Air
Breathing Apparatus
  • Comply with all Health and Safety regulations.
  • Complete Hazard Assessments and write Standard Operating Procedures for daily tasks.
  • Perform basic gas welding, cutting, safe rigging and housing operations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Operate overhead cranes and other mechanical lifting devices.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with repetitious physical demands of stair climbing,
valve turning and sometimes working in confined space

Qualifications

  • High School Graduation or equivalent.
  • Must possess a 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate.
  • Must possess Class III Provincial Wastewater Treatment Certification or be eligible to
attain this certification.
  • Interprovincial (Red Seal) Journeyperson Certificate as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)
would be an asset.
  • 5 years’ experience working in an industrial environment with experience working in a
wastewater facility preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to demonstrate industrial mechanical knowledge
and skills necessary to effectively perform duties as those described above.
  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Applicants with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also
be considered at the discretion of the City.

Hours of Work

Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm. Shift work as required
