Now Hiring - Wastewater Treatment Plant Assistant Shift Operator

Permanent, Full time

As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Assistant Shift Operator, you'll be at the forefront of maintaining and operating our Wastewater Treatment Plant. This technical role involves daily maintenance, equipment repairs, cleaning duties, and conducting tests to meet stringent standards. This is a unionized role in the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), as classified by Alberta Environmental Protection, performs daily maintenance duties, and repairs on equipment, performs cleaning functions, and tests wastewater, sludge, and water to meet prescribed standards. The position is required to work shift work as well as perform stand-by duties.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Ensures compliance with the City's Alberta Environmental Protection Operating Approval for the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the performance of all duties.
  • Responsible for all aspects of operating, the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Troubleshoots and takes corrective action to prevent process upsets and ensures that the effects of any upsets are minimal.
  • Responsible, as assigned on a shift basis, for the operation of a major portion of the WWTP, in the Primary, Secondary, and other treatment areas.
  • Samples, tests, monitors, and records water, wastewater, and sludge as assigned.
  • Monitors ongoing laboratory test results, interprets the data and applies the information to control plant operations in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Monitors, reads, and accurately records plant information.
  • Sound theoretical and practical knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in Wastewater Treatment operations and maintenance.
  • Strong ability to perform complicated mathematical calculations related to quantities, rates, dosages, efficiencies, etc., and to read and record meter and gauge readings.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to work shift work as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 diploma or high school equivalency.
  • MUST possess a valid Alberta Wastewater Treatment Level I Certificate or higher.
  • At least (1) one year of related work experience in a Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 3 Alberta Driver's License with air brake endorsement with an acceptable driving record.
  • A NAIT/SAIT Water and Wastewater Technician Certificate would be an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of management-approved training and experience may be considered.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen.
