What role you will play in our team
Are you motivated to join Imperial as an Water Resources Engineering Student? If you are passionate about safety, building positive relationships, and working within a strong team environment, then we have the role for you!  We currently have an opportunity within our Kearl Mine Planning and Design team.
What you will do
Kearl Mine Water Resources Engineering Student
The role primarily focuses on the short range (3mo-1yr) and mid-range (1-5yr) planning and design of surface water infrastructure to support the water management network at the Kearl oilsands site.  This work can include catchment area definition using software tools (Deswik), modelling of a small watershed (HEC-HMS) to a 1:10 year 24 hour storm event, determine where the water can go (closed circuit/dirty water pond or clean water pond), and design and sizing of sumps, ditches, culverts and pumps (internal tools, industry best practices).  This role is responsible for assisting with planning near future infrastructure and tying it into the existing and long-term planned water management systems (dirty or clean).  Focus will primarily be on managing water within the current and planned (3mo-5yr window) Mine Pit and nearby surrounding areas.
The types of questions this role would be responsible for solving are: How are we going to move/store water within the mine pit, around the mine pit and from the mine pit to ex-pit infrastructure (and can it go there)?  What infrastructure sumps, pumps, discharge lines, etc. do we need?  Where should the sump be? What size?  When do we need it in place? Where should the water be directed to?  What infrastructure do we need to keep/modify to ensure existing systems are still effective? How does water infrastructure and areas of focus tie in with shovel and truck movement, roads, mining?
This role is primarily a planning/design role with the intent to support and provide guidance to operations in the field from a technical standpoint. Visits to site are recommended throughout the term due to this relationship.  Knowledge/School focus of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, and mining operations is an asset.
The position will be dynamic and iterative, requiring problem solving skills, the ability to prioritize and frequent optimization.

-Work closely with the ex-pit Water Resource Engineer / Hydrologist, Civil Field Engineers, and Dewatering Field Engineers
-Support water management issues that require quick technical assessment due to dynamic field shifts (ditch modification, culvert sizing, pump assessment, etc.)
A successful candidate will have strong communication, collaboration and project management skills; supported by a growing understanding (and willingness to learn) of hydrology, hydrogeology, geotechnical, and open pit mining engineering. Understanding of surface water management including; sumps, pumps, ditches, ponds are an asset.
