As a Watershed Engineer, you will lead, design, and implement projects and tasks for The City of Calgary focused on watershed resilience and environmental quality. Initial priorities will focus on drought preparedness and response but will evolve to address a wider range of integrated watershed, climate resilience, and other environmental programs over time. Primary duties will include: 

  • Conduct research, data analysis, and information synthesis.

  • Write reports and provide editing and quality control.

  • Draft and revise technically sound, legible graphs, charts, and presentations.

  • Research and summarize best practices for current activities or new initiatives.

  • Build and maintain networks of relationships with internal subject matter experts and operations staff, external partners, academia, watershed and environmental organizations.

  • Manage projects, including initiating, scoping, planning, executing, monitoring, 
    and closing projects to achieve intended outcomes and benefits on time and on budget.

  • Lead and contribute to environmental actions and projects across a range of topics.

  • Support short-term drought preparedness and response actions to minimize the impacts of drought on Calgarians, businesses, and the regional watershed, including:
    • Assist to enhance technical drought monitoring, science, and operations.

    • Provide technical support to develop Water Sharing Agreements with other water licensees.

    • React to emerging issues and incidents.

    • Contribute to internal and external drought communications for multiple audiences.

    • Link short-term drought actions with long-term water efficiency, climate adaptation, and 
      strategic environmental and water infrastructure planning.

 
Qualifications 
  • A degree in Engineering or Geosciences, and at least 5 years of relevant experience as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) as a licensed professional is required. 

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or licensure by the first day of work. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the fields of watershed planning, water supply management, and watershed monitoring is essential. 

  • Previous experience in project management is considered an asset.

  • Previous experience with water shortage planning, including creation and application of drought indicators and triggers, is considered an asset. 

  • Familiarity with the Alberta Water Act and water license management is considered an asset. 

  • Success in this role requires: strong communication, time management, decision making, critical and analytical thinking skills, flexibility and openness, and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
