Job Synopsis

The Website Coordinator is part of the MCC Digital Communications Team which is part of the MCC Canada Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications (DMC), and MCC U.S. Communications and Donor Relations (CDR) departments. This position is focused on our external audience and is responsible for ensuring websites are up to date and communicating effectively with external audiences on our website. This position will oversee the strategy and content for MCC’s websites ensuring that they are well structured, new content is developed effectively and that they are regularly reviewed and updated as needed. Ensure that the website strategy is implemented by identifying, creating, editing and adapting content for the website, providing leadership to the website team within the Digital Communications Team and working closely with MCC website stakeholders. The Website Coordinator is responsible for providing strategic leadership on the content structure of the website including navigation, taxonomy and content structure. This position will be also lead Search Engine Optimization efforts.

Essential
  • Post-secondary degree in communications, marketing or equivalent experience.
  • 2-3 years’ experience of team leadership.
  • 3-5 years’ experience writing for digital communications platforms.
  • Excellent applied understanding of digital media, specifically web, email and social media as tools of integrated communications.
  • Demonstrated efficient and skillful organizational, creative and conceptual skills. The ability to manage multiple large and small projects at one time.
  • Tactful and perceptive relationship skills, and good judgment to engage in communication with constituents, co-workers and others.
  • Strong writing skills with demonstrated experience adapting content to specific platforms and audiences including web, social media and email for a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to understand the intent behind requests, identifying issues and helping to identify opportunities and appropriate solutions.
  • Able to pull insights from statistical data such as Google Analytics to understand usage and user needs that can be applied to adjusting and improving digital content.
  • Experience working with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how to apply best practices in content development and structure.
  • Experience working with advanced webpage editing and laying out complex information in an easy to follow and digest format.
  • Understanding of the importance of WCAG accessibility guidelines and how to implement best practices on websites.
  • The capacity to network over distance and work effectively within a decentralized team.
Preferred
  • Experience working with website design and related tools.
  • Familiarity with writing style guides such as CP style or AP style.
  • Understanding of MCC audiences in Canada and the U.S. is an asset.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for MCC structure, program and goals is an asset.
Key Responsibilties
Contact/Relationships:
This position works as part of MCC’s Digital Communications Team as part of both the MCC Canada Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications (DMC), and MCC U.S. Communications and Donor Relations (CDR) departments. This position will be required to work with and provide support for staff in the Canada and U.S. national offices, provincial and U.S. regional offices and international offices. This position may be required to interact directly with website visitors, donors and constituents. On occasion this position will be required to work with freelancers and consultants.
Supervision:
The Website Coordinator supervises members of the website team within the Digital Communications Team including:
  • Support and Coordination Specialist
  • Website Content and Translation Specialist (to be hired in 2024)
The Website Coordinator will also be responsible for assisting in choosing and overseeing the work of various consultants and freelancers contracted by the Digital Communications Team.
Complexity/Competencies:
  • Advocate for digital audiences and digital content best practices.
  • Help to find appropriate balance and mediums for effective digital communication that reflect priorities established by leadership and is reflected in MCC’s focus calendar and program across Canada, the U.S. and internationally.
  • Balance content, priorities and work demands between Canada and the U.S.
  • Participate as part of the content production teams in both Canada and the U.S. - adapting content to digital platforms and producing new digital content as needed, informed by team processes and taking editorial leadership from the Digital Communications Manager (on behalf of both MCC Canada DMC and MCC U.S. CDR).
  • Work within all established standards and protocols for preparation, editing and vetting of editorial content.
  • Manage the content architecture of a website that is shared by multiple countries, offices and departments often with competing priorities ensuring that the website meets organizational priorities while being easy for website visitors to use.
  • Work under pressure, completing projects to meet deadlines.
  • Required to work flexible hours outside of normal working hours to support systems or emergency responses when needed.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail are critical.
Independent Action:
  • Provide leadership and help to set priorities for the website and website team.
  • Complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Help identify and prioritize areas of concern or opportunities, keeping the needs of our audience as our highest priority.
  • Juggle multiple projects while being flexible to adjust to urgent needs as they come up.
  • Review the content and the structure of the website identifying areas that need to be removed, updated or improved.
  • Analyze website and content performance, producing reports and training colleagues to do the same for their focused areas.
  • Keep up to date with changes in the tools used, industry best practices, SEO tactics and accessibility legislation providing updates to leadership and training for staff working with websites.
Initiative and Ingenuity:
  • Adapt content and tactics to best communicate through different platforms.
  • Through review, analysis and experimentation identify areas of content, structure or functionality that need to be updated to improve user experience.
  • Create schedules to ensure that content is regularly reviewed, updated and pruned.
  • Proactively identify existing content produced by communicators and others within MCC, worker blogs or other sources to be repurposed as well as new content that should be created to connect with priorities and foci, current issues, world events, disaster responses and constituent interests.
  • Develop, review and manage MCC’s digital content style guides working with others in Digital Communications to ensure that guides are kept up-to-date and are evolve appropriately with industry best practices and standards.
  • Identify and experiment with new forms of content and storytelling to connect MCC’s message to existing constituents and new audiences.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Lead the website team and work collaboratively as part of the Digital Communications Team providing input based on expertise and experience.
  • Focus on balancing the needs of MCC with the needs of our audiences, determining how to most effectively communicate with target audiences.
  • Professional information-gathering, writing and communications skills and the ability to choose photos and multimedia to enrich storytelling.
  • Assist the Social Media Coordinator in responding directly to specific constituent comments and questions during busy periods.
  • Help to cover for the Social Media Coordinator, Email and Online Donations Specialist and Support and Coordination Specialist when they are absent from work.
Mental/Physical/Visual Demand:
  • Ability to manage a high-stress work environment, because of the complexity of the organization, and the nature of the large number and sometimes contradictory demands on one’s time.

MCC’s websites are a vibrant and effective tool for engaging supporters with the work of MCC. Websites will engage new and existing supporters, and clearly communicate the work of MCC and invite readers to participate actively in MCC.

Duties
  • Provide day-to-day leadership of the website team as part of the Digital Communications Team.
    • Help to set priorities and expectations for members of the website team providing leadership and mentorship to members helping them to grow in their roles.
    • Lead website related projects working with audiences, stakeholders and consulting partners as required.
    • Manage administrative tasks for the website team including items such as approving expenditures and regular performance reviews.
    • Assist the Digital Communications Manager in developing and managing the website budget.
    • Assist with the selecting and managing relationships with outside consultants and vendors for website related projects.
  • Help manage and set strategic direction for the content, architecture and functionality of MCC’s websites.
    • Together with other members of the Digital Communications Team, establish and maintain digital content strategies and style guides for websites that support MCC communications strategies.
    • Assist the Digital Communications Manager and the Digital Communications Governance body with the creation, maintenance and enforcement of digital communications policies, best practices and procedures related to websites.
    • Using analysis, surveying and experimentation, continue to refine the content and structure of the website ensuring it continues to meet the needs of MCC and our audiences.
    • Recommend and make changes to website content, architecture, navigational structures, taxonomies and functionality to ensure that the website is easy for audiences to use.
    • Audit the website, provide training and make adjustments to ensure that accessibility best practices and requirements are implemented on the website.
    • Design, manage, implement and refine Search Engine Optimization strategies for MCC websites. Provide training to content creators and website editors to support effective SEO.
    • Participate in projects within the Digital Communications Team, Marketing and Donor Relations teams sharing expertise to help develop content strategies, website structures and to identify areas of concern.
    • Together with other members of the Digital Communications Team and MCC content creators, research and initiate experimentation with new forms of storytelling and content formats, monitoring performance to determine suitability as a regular storytelling tool.
    • Keep up to date on trends, industry best practices, tools and legislation related to websites in digital communications, sharing learnings with the Digital Communications Team and other MCC staff.
  • Maintain and develop content for MCC’s websites.
    • Lead the work of adapting, coordinating, posting and generating content for the website keeping the website up to date and relevant, pulling in and consulting with other staff and stakeholders as needed.
    • Assist staff creating and posting content on the website helping to ensure that content being developed fits within the structure of the website, meets MCC’s style guides, SEO and accessibility best practices, and that it is formatted well on the website.
    • Help to plan and implement campaigns and initiatives including disaster responses. Assist in making sure that content and structures are used effectively in campaigns and that activities can be accurately tracked and review.
    • Create and manage regular schedules to ensure that all content on the website is regularly reviewed, identifying content that needs to be updated, removed or that does not conform with MCC’s style guides or established best practices. Work with stakeholder groups to review and update content as required.
    • Manage the website homepage schedule, collaborating with others to determine content that should be elevated to the homepage, content that needs to be updated and content that should be removed.
    • Analyze, interpret, report and present on the effectiveness of the website to content creators, leadership and other teams on a regular basis.
    • Ensure the website continues to meet accessibility requirements and works within established industry best practices.
  • Provide strategic leadership to offices and departments in MCC who are creating content for the MCC website and who may also be creating or maintaining additional specialized websites.
    • Work with offices and departments who have a presence on MCC’s websites to review existing content to ensure that it is up-to-date and meets requirements and providing advice on how to improve their website content.
    • Assist offices and departments who have access to work with content on MCC’s websites and have questions or need assistance with content development, layout, structure or best practices.
    • Provide ongoing support and training to MCC staff on questions and changes about digital content best practices, style guides, industry standards and legislation related to website communications.
    • Work with staff who are building or maintaining approved websites in addition to MCC’s primary websites to help develop content strategies, website structure and processes to ensure best practices are met.
  • Miscellaneous duties as part of the Digital Communications Team
    • Participate as part of the Digital Communications Team providing insight and advice into conversations and projects related to digital communications across platforms.
    • Travel a few times a year (up to 10% of time) within Canada and the U.S. to participate in in-person meetings.
    • Act as a backup for the Social Media Coordinator when needed, assisting with the posting of social media content and responding to constituent questions and comments during periods of high traffic or when they are away.
    • Act as a backup for the Email Specialist when needed, assisting with the creation of newsletter content, managing mailing lists and supporting staff using the Campaign Monitor tool during periods of high demand or when they are away.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Details

Base salary: $63,757. Salary is indicated in Canadian funds and can be adjusted to reflect USD upon hire.
