Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the position of Welding Apprentice with the Corporate Fleet division of Property, Fleet & Environment. Please note that in order to be considered for other posted apprenticeship opportunities, you must apply to each individual competition.

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, the Apprentice will perform welding and fabrication work on HRM-owned heavy equipment, vehicles, snowplows, etc. The incumbent would be subject to noise, odors, grease, and dirt associated with a garage environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Receive and complete work orders and assigned tasks through use of computerized work order fleet management system, ie. Fleet Focus;
  • Welding in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions;
  • Weld and/or cut with oxygen/acetylene;
  • Take measurements, lay out work and calculate material requirements;
  • Reading and interpreting of blue prints or plans pertaining to burning, fitting and welding;
  • Various welding, cutting and fitting repairs or construction/fabrication to HRM equipment vehicles and plow blades attachments;
  • Ability to design, fabricate and fit metal work;
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed;
  • Familiar with proper shop practices related to a welding shop;
  • Ensures work completed meets specifications;
  • Familiar with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and their application;
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Must register and comply with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Program to attain journeyperson certification.
  • Must comply with the Memorandum of Understanding #4- Apprenticeship Training as identified in the CUPE Local 108 collective agreement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Preference will be given to candidates in the following order:
  • Graduate of a related 2-year diploma program from a recognized community college; OR
  • Eligible to enroll in an apprenticeship program (with 2 years of relevant work experience in a garage environment)
  • Enrolled in a related 2-year diploma program from a recognized community college with an estimated graduation date of May 2024
  • Completion of grade 12 (or equivalent) with an interest in the trade
  • Candidates already enrolled in an apprenticeship program are also encouraged to apply.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 drivers' license, with a good driving record (a current Driver’s Abstract will be required before appointment)
  • Must have a reasonable knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Must have a reasonable understanding of preventative maintenance.
  • Must have familiarity with computers.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must have good attendance, as well as be reliable and punctual.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
Candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and have valid licensing, as required.

WORK STATUS: Apprenticeship Program up to a maximum of six (6) years. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, the applicant may apply and be successfully awarded a permanent position with HRM. Please note that successful completion of the apprenticeship program will not automatically result in an appointment to journeyperson status or full-time employment.
HOURS OF WORK: 8:00am - 4:00pm, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week), with the exception of overtime required for operational requirements.
SALARY: $29.43 per hour for Year 1, increasing by $1.00 per hour per year until it reaches 90% of the journeyperson rate (MOU #4 of the CUPE 108 collective agreement)
WORK LOCATION: Corporate Fleet (150 Thornhill Dr, Burnside, Dartmouth)
