About Our Opportunity


The Wildlife Park includes a range of animal enclosures, buildings, trails, public amenities and parking lots as well a water treatment facility.
As Head of Maintenance, you will be supervising a range of trades (either on staff or contractors) and provide project management, to ensure timely repairs and maintenance to the park so that the wildlife, staff and public can enjoy a safe and comfortable experience. You will represent construction and maintenance needs to management, and work with fellow supervisors to ensure the park remains a facility that delivers positive recreational and education experiences to Nova Scotians and all visitors.

Primary Accountabilities


Under the supervision of the Manager, the Head of Maintenance is responsible for the delivery of facility maintenance with a team of park maintainers, other government staff and private contractors, including their overall safety. Duties include supervision of Maintenance team, oversight of routine maintenance programs, operation and upgrades of facility infrastructure, crown lands, buildings, vehicles, heavy equipment, and other motorized equipment; oversight of construction projects, and ensuring facility remains safe for the wildlife, public and staff. The Head of Maintenance supports the delivery of animal care, visitor experience and education at the park. Year-round grounds maintenance, from snow clearing to grass cutting is also supervised by the Head of Maintenance.
This position reports to the Manager of the Wildlife Park.

Qualifications and Experience


Completion of a Carpentry Apprenticeship Program with Red Seal Endorsement is preferred.
You have exceptional communication (verbal and written) skills and the ability to clearly communicate and effectively interact with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You also have strong and interpersonal speaking skills which enable you to work with a diverse rang of trades.
You have a strong sense of initiative to seek out new and creative program delivery ideas. You possess a high level of organizational, time management and decision-making skills. Good judgement, effective decision-making skills and the ability to adapt to change is essential. Experience with general office software is required, such as, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook and Internet.
The following are considered assets:
  • Current first aid certification
  • Project management experience
  • Experience directly supervising small teams
  • Safety certifications (WHMIS, confined space, working at heights, chainsaw, etc)
  • Experience operating a range of equipment from hand tools to tractors

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, practical exam, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


Must be able to adapt to flexible working situations and requirements daily, including occasionally working weekends, evenings, and overnight stays within the province. Must also be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to complete demanding physical labour.

Additional Information


A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence (class 5 minimum) or equivalent is required.
A valid Vulnerable Sector/Criminal Background/Child abuse register checks are required.
Proficiency with computers is required, as many management functions require the use of several software systems.

Pay Grade: MOS 15

Salary Range: $2,018.68 - $2,121.70 Bi-Weekly
