Title: YMCA Summer Camp Inclusion Support Lead

Reports to: Youth Coordinator

Position Status: Summer Employment (June 17-August 23, 2024)

Salary Range: $17.00 per hour for 40 hrs per week

Start Date: June 2024

Office Locations: Sydney NS

The YMCA of Cape Breton is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Child and Youth Team. We are hiring for summer positions to support our summer day camp based out of our Charlotte Street and Eltuek Arts Center locations.

Responsibilities & Duties:

YMCA Child and Youth staff are responsible for providing a safe, positive, inclusive environment for kids. Specifically, you will:

  • Assist with in-take interviews with participants and their families/guardians.
  • Support campers that require extra support and an individualized plan to support inclusive participation.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in relation to providing Inclusion Support.
  • Assist Youth Coordinator in developing individual inclusion plans based on specific needs, abilities, and interests with all staff.
  • Ensure that all strategies, which are implemented, are compatible with all YMCA programs/polices.
  • Assists to ensure a safe and secure program environment for all.
  • Support Youth Coordinator to provide effective first response during incidents/emergencies; activate secondary, tertiary emergency response in a timely manner. Ensure the provision of therapeutic intervention during times of crisis utilizing appropriate crisis prevention intervention and/or therapeutic intervention techniques

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Student entering or continuing full time post secondary studies.
  • Preferred qualification of enrolment in an undergraduate university degree or college diploma in a relevant field of study such as Therapeutic Recreation, Child and Youth Studies, Psychology, Education, Social Work, School of Communication Disorders, Kinesiology- and/or equivalent level of training working with children and youth with a disability.
  • Minimum 1-2 years related experience working with individuals of various ages and disabilities
  • Previous training and/or experience in implementing behavior management strategies considered an asset.
  • Have demonstrated interest and knowledge of working with individuals with special needs who require support.
  • Be able to effectively provide support to those people who have special needs and have a good knowledge of inclusion strategies, adapting activities, behavior management and community resources.
  • Have the ability to develop and access a variety of resources and a working knowledge of recreation program planning to meet the needs of all program participants.

Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check. They will also be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training, as well as successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
