About the Position
Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a full time Activations Assistant who is committed to providing optimal patient care and
dedication to the NGH Mission to relieve illness and suffering, and help people live.
Position Duties & Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Activation Coordinator, the Activation Assistant is responsible for the direct provision of

recreation and leisure programming in order to enhance the quality of life of patients on the Complex Continuing

Care Unit.

• Responsible to implementing recreation and leisure group programs and one to one intervention.

• Responsible for supporting the Activation Coordinator in education, training, and overseeing volunteers and

students that contribute to recreation related programming.

Position Qualifications

• Completion of a Diploma or Degree from a recognized Therapeutic Recreation program required.

• Eligible for registration (R/TRO) or a member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is preferred.

• Previous experience working in Therapeutic Recreation setting in Geriatrics (may include Cognitive Support,

Palliative Care, and Rehabilitation).

• Experience working with individuals with varied medical diagnosis and both physical and/or cognitive impairments

in a Therapeutic Recreation setting.

• Demonstrates experience developing adaptations to recreation activities to enhance participation and

engagement and help patients overcome barriers to leisure participation.

• Demonstrates understanding of dementia and a thorough understanding responsive behaviors and behavioral

expression as a form of communication.

• Demonstrates a commitment to patient centered care.

• Must be flexible and be able to adapt to patients’ needs and abilities.

• Experience working in a multidisciplinary and inter-professional setting and ability to work both independently and

in collaboration with team members.

• Demonstrates commitment to customer service.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

• Demonstrates flexibility in times of increased workload

• Energetic, Compassionate person who enjoys working with the elderly.

• Demonstrates a commitment in maintaining confidentiality and discretion in patient/record contacts.

• Experience in dementia care programming and multi-sensory rooms considered an asset.

• Gentle Persuasive Approach Certificate considered an asset.
