The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is a registered charity and has been operating for 150 years. The Society provides care, comfort and compassion to animals in need in communities across Ontario; we value all animals and advocate to treat them with respect and kindness. Opportunity
Animal Care Attendant (ACA): We are seeking 4 experienced ACAs with a love for spending time enriching the lives of the animals within our care. ACAs understand that ensuring a clean, stimulating, and healthy environment is paramount to quality of life for our furry residents.
Status: Full-time and Part-time roles available
Location: Provincial Animal Transfer Hub, Midland, ON
A Typical Day
Animal Care
- Feeding of all animals housed within the shelter
- General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises and equipment used within the shelter in adherence with infectious disease prevention protocols
- Laundry duties
- General bathing and grooming of animals as required
- Receives incoming animals and logs individual animal information
- Vaccinates shelter animals as per Ontario SPCA protocols under the supervision of the Animal Centre Manager or their designate.
- Notifies supervisor immediately of any potential animal health problems or concerns
- Seeks RVT and/or veterinary advice and transports animals to vet clinic as needed
- Administers animal medications as prescribed
- Maintain accurate animal records.
Animal Enrichment
- Performs regular animal enrichment based on the needs of the animal, including but not limited to exercising, engaging in play activities, and providing novel experiences/tastes/smells
- Endeavours to provide a consistent and stress-reduced environment through shelter protocols and Fear Free best practices
- Works closely with Manager and Animal Behaviour Coordinator regarding behaviour support for animals in care
Operations
- Ensures accurate animal inventory, health data, and Animal Care scheduling in our Shelter Buddy system
- Assists in interior/exterior maintenance if needed i.e., cleaning of outside dog runs, lawn maintenance, snow removal
Additional Functions
Including but not limited to:
- Animal transfer and transport between provincial animal centres with society vehicle
- Aid the Centre Manager in training, supervision, retention, and scheduling of volunteers or foster homes in the Ontario SPCA Volunteer Program (subject to individual centre needs)
- Maintain confidentiality of animals in care

Do You Have What it Takes?
- Excellent communication skills
- Team player
- Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs) and control 34 kg (75lbs)
- Valid G drivers licence with the ability to provide a clear driver’s abstract
- Open availability including weekdays, weekends and holidays
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) required
- Previous clerical training and an asset
- Customer service experience an asset
- Certificate or College Diploma in Animal Care or working towards, preferred
