Job description

Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the Assistant Chief Power Engineer Operator will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost effective operation of the energy system.

Duties and responsibilities include working closely with a highly qualified team of energy operators, maintaining maximum uptime, maintaining open communications with production personnel, and active participation in the operation’s efforts towards safety, continuous innovation and process improvements initiatives.


Assistant Chief Power Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Active participation towards providing and promoting a safe working environment
  • Ensuring the daily operations and maintenance of the Energy Systems is in compliance with ABSA – including, the high-pressure steam generation systems, the thermal liquid heating plant, and air compression
  • Ensuring the operation meets all required government regulations and is compliant on all environmental issues
  • Ensuring manuals and operating procedures are established and kept up to date
  • Ensuring the steam plant ancillary equipment and water treatment is functioning efficiently.
  • Liaison for the dryer and screening systems
  • Coordinating, implementing and maintaining environmental permit with respect to the Wet Electrostatic Precipitator
  • Facilitation to ensure monitoring on a day-to-day basis of the spark detection system
  • Coordinating regular training and skill upgrading for energy crews
  • Monitoring 3 biomass fired furnaces and a gas fired liquid heater
  • Responsible for loss control prevention management
  • Monitoring potable water (pump houses, wells and storage)
  • Supporting Maintenance Manager in defining operation and maintenance projects for the Energy Dryer area
  • Promoting and leading continuous innovation and process improvement initiatives
  • Provide supervision for various trades during maintenance tasks within the energy area
  • Responding to changing priorities and operating conditions within the business

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • A 3rd Class Power Engineering certificate or greater
  • Experience with thermal oil heating systems, preference for OSB mill experience
  • A commitment to safe work practices
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and team-based environment
  • Must have track record of consistently demonstrating leadership skills as well as positive influence and accomplishments
