Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Providence University College invites applicants for one full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Media and Communications. By the time of appointment, applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in communication studies, media studies, cultural studies, or a related field.

At Providence we invite, encourage, and listen carefully to different voices and opinions, all in the service of strengthening and clarifying our faith. We seek to understand myriad perspectives and challenge systems that oppress and marginalize. A candidate with a strong background in theoretical perspectives is encouraged to apply. We welcome applicants who have teaching/research/lived experience in one or more of the following areas: media literacy, postmodern thought, semiotics, digital culture, or popular culture. In addition to a candidate’s own area of specialization, knowledge and familiarity with critical theory and its intersection with culture and faith is also important to the department.

The successful candidate will develop and contribute to the communications and media program. They will teach a variety of courses each year, mentor communication and media majors, and eventually supervise honours students. In addition to introductory communications theory, course topics could include visual communications, global journalism, a focus on various types of media (film, television, radio, etc.), and more. The successful applicant is encouraged to speak into the curriculum and the communications and media program and edit or design new courses, as needed.

As is typical within Providence, this position is predominantly a teaching-focused faculty position. Research and/or public scholarship goals are additional assets.

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

  • Capable to serve as a mentor and advisor to students.
  • A record or promise of scholarly achievement
  • Ability to work well with students, staff, and faculty in a collegial environment.
  • An ability to integrate Christian faith and learning into all aspects of their role.
