Assistant Professor - Sociology

POSITION OVERVIEW

Providence University College invites applicants for one full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Sociology. By the time of appointment, applicant must have an earned Ph.D. in sociology, or a related field.

We seek to understand myriad perspectives and challenge systems that oppress and marginalize. We welcome applicants who have teaching/research/lived experience in one or more of the following areas: anti-colonial, anti-racist, decolonizing, critical race, migration, and critical analyses of disability in society.

The successful candidate will contribute to the established sociology program and join the dynamic Natural and Social Science department that brings together scientists and social scientists at Providence. They will teach a variety of courses each year, mentor sociology majors, and eventually supervise sociology or social science honours students. In addition to introductory sociology, course topics could include marriage, family, gender, race and ethnicity, religion, health, sport, and more. The successful applicant will be welcome to speak into the curriculum and the sociology program as a whole, and edit or design new courses, as necessary.

As is typical within Providence, this position is predominantly a teaching-focused faculty position. Research and/or public scholarship goals are additional assets.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have:

• Earned doctorate in sociology, or a related field.
• Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
• Knowledge of pedagogical best practices for in-person courses.
• Evidence of mentorship potential.
• Ability to work well with students, staff, and faculty in a collegial environment.
• ·Desire to infuse their Christian faith into all aspects of their role.
