About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a regular full-time Associate Director to join our dynamic Employee Safety and Well-Being team in our People Culture and Performance division. This critical leadership role directly serves our mission as Canada’s Biological Lifeline – and helps to ensure our employees, and the essential work they perform, occurs in a safe and healthy environment – an environment fostering high levels of employee engagement and dedication.

The Employee Safety and Well-Being team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by providing core non-occupational and occupational health, safety, wellness, and recognition programs to Canadian Blood Services employees. This role gives you an opportunity to drive our safety culture and enhance the wellness of employees across the organization.

In this role, you will shape the organization's approach to Safety and employee wellness. You will ensure corporate programs, policies and processes support all necessary health, safety, wellness, and recognition requirements, to address legislative obligations and beyond, and to enhance and promote our essential safety culture. You will seek to minimize and eliminate workplace injury, occupational disease, and ensure an early and safe return to work of employees who are injured or with health conditions or impairments. Related to our safety programming, this role is uniquely responsible for employee wellness and employee recognition programs – a holistic leadership role with a broad impact on Employee Safety and well-being. This role requires creative and innovative leadership, and deep subject matter depth in the health and safety environment.

Formula for success

  • Utilizing your proven experience, you will readily size-up an ambitious agenda to advance our already-robust Safety and well-being programming that amplifies our mission, vision, and corporate strategy.
  • Drawing on your strong leadership capabilities, you will provide advice, expertise and contribute to the direction of all areas of Employee Safety, health, wellness, and recognition.
  • You will collaborate and liaise, as appropriate, with provincial workers’ compensation boards, Ministries of Labour, and other agency representatives and legislative bodies on matters concerning occupational Safety and workers’ compensation.
  • Focusing on your ability to lead and work collaboratively across diverse teams, you will provide strategic direction on Disability Case Management Programs (both short-term and long-term) and Workers’ Compensation matters.
  • Leveraging your ability to prioritize and your strong communication skills, you will provide effective and insightful reporting to the organization, the Executive team, and the Board of Directors.
  • Using your ability to build relationships with key subject matter experts and influencers across various departments, you will provide strategic direction and leadership to the organization on matters of Employee Safety and wellness.
  • Concentrating on your strong analytical skills, you will ensure comprehensive audits are conducted across the system, report regularly on audit findings, and establish continuous improvement plans to respond to issues identified through audits.
  • You will be required to participate in, or lead special projects as assigned and serve on working committees and teams to provide subject matter expertise, discuss issues of mutual concern and interest, and increase awareness of occupational safety, employee health, and workers’ compensation issues.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Eight years of Employee Safety and well-being/disability management experience, including managerial experience in both unionized and non-unionized work environments
  • Knowledge of applicable related Occupational Health and Safety legislation and WCB/WSIB Acts and financial processes.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
