The David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation is the Rotman School of Management’s home for research and resources about boards of directors and Corporate Governance. Our purpose is to support academic research and teaching, generate practical tools and insights and host events that improve the effectiveness of boards. We focus on under-served sectors such as family enterprise, both public and private, co-operatives, crown corporations and dual-class public issuers
The Associate Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, advisory and managerial oversight in directing the activities of the Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation at the Rotman School of Management in collaboration with the Academic Director of the Centre. The Associate Director will develop long-term plans and strategies for the Centre and management of Centre staff, will organize events of the Centre, will oversee data collections and dissemination, will oversee the research fellows program, and will manage the budgets and financial administration of the Centre. The incumbent also drafts various position papers and reports, represents the Centre with various stakeholder groups, including Corporate Governance professionals, regulators, banking and corporate leaders, the legal profession, policy makers, government, and other professional advisors, oversees all external communications and publications, and collaborates on grant writing and fundraising activities.  The Associate Director also will lead efforts aimed at student engagement, including the student fellowship program. The incumbent is accountable for all administrative functions related to the Centre and its performance including management of Centre staff, budgets and planning, and is the primary contact for all matters relating to the Centre.
This position is responsible for interacting with senior business leaders and decision-makers i.e., CEO’s, Board Members and SVP-level Managers.  They will be participating in advisory boards and committees.  Therefore, this role requires maturity and business acumen to represent the Rotman School with credibility and trust.  The incumbent must develop and maintain strong and productive relationships across varied constituent groups (CEO’s and Senior Executives in the Corporate sector, Government, Sponsors, Faculty and guest Executives).
EDUCATION:
An undergraduate degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Demonstration of academic excellence is preferred. Background in Corporate Governance issues affecting publicly-traded corporations and capital markets is preferred.  
EXPERIENCE:
5-10 years of related management experience. Experience working with senior management levels in government, industry and industry regulators.  Experience developing strong partnerships and alliances with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders is required. Experience working on Corporate Governance issues affecting publicly-traded corporations preferred.  Demonstrated experience in managing and leading staff and team, preferably in a unionized environment. Entrepreneurial leadership experience in creating and building new initiatives inside organizations or as independent entities.
SKILLS:
Strategic planning, budget and financial management, project and event management, research skills, experience securing and managing funds. Strong verbal and written communication skills along with proven networking and relationship development and management capabilities. Success will require organization, strong planning skills and the ability to be self-motivated as well as flexible and adaptable.  Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills, strong organizational abilities, superb presentation skills and ability to deal effectively with highly diverse and demanding communities of stakeholders. The incumbent must be able to effectively engage multiple stakeholders including faculty, corporate clients, university administrators, staff, alumni, students, and business partners. Strong computer skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are a must; knowledge of data management is a positive. Creative problem solving and independent judgment, critical thinking, political acumen, negotiation and persuasion skills. Must be self-motivated and confident with sound judgment and keen diplomatic skills.
OTHER:
Demonstrated commitment to and interest in issues related to Corporate Governance. Maturity and professionalism to deal with senior executives is essential.  Demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic and culturally diverse environment.  Tact, cultural sensitivity, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Political skill and diplomacy are requirements of the job, as are creative problem solving, teamwork, and process management capability.  Demonstrated strong, practical understanding of strategic leadership with the ability to define vision and priorities, governance structures, organization design and resource plans, managing, developing, mentoring and supporting staff, and in managing organizational change.

Part-Time position - 50% FTE (2.5 days per week).
