Job Summary

The Ministry is seeking one full-time Aquatic Habitat Biologist to provide senior advisory services to the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation program area in the natural resource sector. This position will require application of the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation technical manual in reviewing environmental assessments of varying complexity. The successful candidate will work within the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation team to provide consistent and sound regulatory advice to local governments, environmental consultants, First Nations, the development community and the general public. There will be opportunities for this position to lead projects on unique natural resource initiatives and priorities as it pertains to aquatic and riparian habitat, and to recommend changes in regulations, policies, procedures and inter-agency or intergovernmental agreements in order to increase efficiency.

Job Requirements:
Education & Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree or higher in biological sciences or a related field and two (2) years of related experience*, OR
  • Diploma or Technical diploma in biological sciences or a related field and three (3) years of related experience*, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology. (Note: Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible).

* Related experience must include:
  • Experience assessing aquatic ecosystems and/or environmental assessments in a field and/or office setting.
  • Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
  • Experience in completing assessments under the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation (previously the Riparian Areas Regulation).
  • Experience providing scientific and regulatory advice regarding biological impacts because of resource development.
  • Experience working and collaborating with First Nations.
  • Experience in riparian habitat restoration.
  • Experience in leading the exchange of scientific information with external and internal stakeholder groups.
  • Successful completion of the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation course.

Willingness Statements
  • Have or be able to obtain a valid B.C. driver's licence or equivalent.
  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.

Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Please include your registration number with the College of Applied Biology ( CAB ) within your application, as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with CAB . If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).

This position can be based in any Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
