Boat Operator

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is a unique, luxury, fully inclusive resort, located on the remote West Coast of Vancouver Island, just a 45minute seaplane flight from Vancouver or a 40minute boat ride from Tofino. Open seasonally to guests from all over the world, our guests stay with us for 3, 4 or 7 nights and get to experience the best the wilderness has to offer, from wildlife viewing to fishing, hiking to canyoning, and even horseback riding.

We now have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Boat Operator to join our Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge family on Vancouver Island.

The Role

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic, conservation-minded individual to fill the seasonal full-time position of Sightseeing Boat Operator tentatively between May 1 and Sept. 30, 2024. Duties for this ecotourism position include, but are not limited to:

• competent operation of various vessels not exceeding 5 ton
• fuelling and maintaining boat and equipment on board
• cleaning and provisioning of vessel(s).

Requirements:

The energetic applicant must have all pertinent certifications including a minimum of:

• SVOP, MED A3, MC-ROC and Wilderness First Aid/CPR (or their equivalents)
• Extensive coastal boating experience in all weather and sea conditions.
• A basic understanding of boat mechanics and the ability to troubleshoot
• The ability to operate in remote areas and in the absence of readily available assistance
• Experience working on and around boats as this is a physically demanding role and involves both dexterity and intuition.

Additional Information:

• Refined interpersonal skills are preferred due to high level of guest-oriented care, that is the ability to communicate effectively and in a manner that is engaging, entertaining and inspiring all the while ensuring the safety and comfort of guests.
• The ability to describe points of interest, answering questions and supplying information are key components to the job.
• Situational awareness and the ability to assess and respond to guest needs and interests are imperatives.
• Geological, cultural and natural interpretation of the Pacific Northwest with an emphasis on bear, otter and whale physiology and ecology is necessary.

The ideal candidate will possess professional interpretive skills as pertaining to the natural, geological and cultural history of coastal British Columbia and an awareness of contemporary issues as they pertain to coastal BC. Graduates with majors in biology, environmental education, natural resources or other related fields are preferred.
