Building Trades Supervisor

Under the general direction of the Manager of Facilities, the Building Trades Supervisor will plan, coordinate, and supervise carpentry, joinery, locksmith, painting, equipment repair and warehouse maintenance activities to achieve the highest level of quality, safety, and effectiveness. The Building Trades Supervisor is responsible for building trade systems, as well as hazardous materials management for the district. This role requires an in-depth understanding of rules and regulations related to building code and hazardous materials management and assumes primary responsibility for meeting all legislated and other requirements.

A degree in Architecture or Engineering with a thorough understanding of building code, accessibility and hardware

Red Seal qualification in a building trade accompanied by demonstrable experience in managing a work order system in a multi facility environment

Minimum of seven (7) years’ recent and related experience demonstrating knowledge in:

budget preparation and management for a minimum of $2M in annual funding

hazardous materials management as it relates to OH&S and Worksafe BC

current best practices in the building and site maintenance practices, municipal and fire codes, hazard management techniques and preventative maintenance fundamentals

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the supervision of staff; preferably in a unionized setting

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office (outlook, word and excel), familiarity with host and internet-based computer applications and demonstrable ability to manage a computer based work order system

Experience working in the in the public sector; preferably in the K-12 education sector

The salary range for this full-time Building Trades Supervisor has a minimum salary of $84,020 to $105,025 per annum. Initial placement within the range is based on related education and experience. We also offer a competitive benefits package and pension.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Manager of Facilities, the Building Trades Supervisor will plan, coordinate, and supervise carpentry, joinery, locksmith, painting, equipment repair and warehouse maintenance activities to achieve the highest level of quality, safety, and effectiveness. The Building Trades Supervisor is responsible for building trade systems, as well as hazardous materials management for the district. This role requires an in-depth understanding of rules and regulations related to building code and hazardous materials management and assumes primary responsibility for meeting all legislated and other requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Accepts personal accountability to ensure that Facilities Operations remain compliant with all legislative and regulatory requirements

Works autonomously and accepts personal accountability for complex decision-making required to respond to both routine and urgent/unexpected issues that arise

Is responsible for developing and managing budgets; accepts personal accountability for ensuring all work is on time and on budget

Assumes primary responsibility for the management of contractors and ensuring that all contract obligations are met. This includes directly and autonomously managing and correcting instances when contract terms are not being met

Is a primary contributor to strategic planning and setting overall goals / objectives within the Facilities Department

Supervises the execution of daily/weekly preventative and corrective maintenance tasks and prioritizes work assigned to the team

Recommends technical improvements for cost reductions, equipment maintainability and reliability

Administers work order system by generating notifications, closing work orders, and recording data and trends

Assures the quality of the job of trades staff in the field, ensuring work meets standards and is performed safely; following best practices and any required safe work procedures

Ensures proper storage of lubricants and cleanliness of trades shops, manages inventory levels of key parts and supplies

Participates in weekly safety discussions, planning meetings as well as major shut-down meetings to coordinate and communicate tasks with other departments

Responsible for the timely response to repair requests. Guarantees the correct and on time execution of work, interprets the results and generates actions based on inspections

Monitors job duration, cost and performance of staff working under their supervision

Establishes training program needed for assigned staff and annual training is conducted as required

Coordinates meetings with supplier and service providers to check new/innovative developments or new techniques available to optimize workload and equipment

Aids in the design of all projects and project execution

Assumes primary responsibility for hazardous materials management for the district

Works collaboratively with union representatives; understands applicable legislation, collective agreements, policies, and regulations

Provides updates and reports to Facilities Management on work order completion and project status

Assumes primary responsibility for the recruitment and selection of new staff; making hire / no hire decisions

Assumes primary responsibility for overseeing internal job postings and selecting the most qualified candidates in line with Collective Agreement requirements

Delivers performance management, including (when required) the issuance of progressive discipline up to and including termination

Investigates and resolves grievances from CUPE Local 459 on behalf of the District. In collaboration with the HR Department, represents the District within grievance and arbitration proceedings

Investigates, mediates and resolves occurrences of interpersonal conflict in the workplace, including allegations of bullying/harassment amongst staff

Performs legislated investigations into workplace incidents and provides corrective actions as required (WorkSafe BC)

Implements and monitors asset control policy, including, but not limited to, tools

Keeps in mind the safety of others including school children

Performs other duties as required

Education and Experience
