Job description

Position Title: Caseworker

Status: Full Time (40 hrs/week)

Reports to: Executive Director, South Shore Community Justice Society

Location: Office in Bridgewater (covering Lunenburg and Queens Counties)

Position Summary: The caseworker is responsible for the delivery of the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice and Community Service Order programs for youth and adult referrals from the South Shore (Lunenburg and Queens Counties) as well as facilitating restorative approaches outside of the criminal justice system. The ideal candidate will be someone whose values align with the principles of the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice program. Someone who is collaborative, empowering, open-minded and a life-long learner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Make contact and meet individually with all parties, including (but not limited to) the referred person, harmed parties, referral sources and others who may be connected or affected

· Design and facilitate Restorative Justice circles in collaboration with your co-facilitator and/or other staff members

· Maintain and record appropriate case notes on internal operating system

· Ability to capture and articulate themes/challenges/barriers across files

· Attend regularly scheduled collaboration session with team members to map and design next steps in restorative justice processes

· Identify and articulate the needs of clients and the communities we serve

· Support client’s in successfully fulfilling their restorative justice process and forward-focused plans

· Prepare Post-Conviction Restorative Justice reports

· Respond to inquiries from Probation, Crown Attorney, Judges, Police Officers and other justice officials in a timely manner

· Network with community agencies and justice system stakeholders to foster and promote partnerships

· Provide information, support or referrals to outside agencies for all participants

Employment and Working Conditions:

This position is subject to the personnel policies of South Shore Community Justice Society, and works from a principled position adhering to the Nova Scotia Department of Justice NSRJP Protocols. The normal hours of employment will be 40 hours/week (scheduled hours typically between the hours of Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm). Flexibility is required to accommodate our clients on evenings and weekends for which compensating time off will be granted. The position requires the use of a private vehicle.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

· Post-Secondary degree in social sciences, criminology, restorative justice or equivalent combination of education and experience (including lived experience with restorative justice)

· Ability to work in a collaborative and relationships-based environment

· Knowledge of the justice system, and in particular the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the Criminal Code of Canada

· Solid understanding of the mission and vision of South Shore Community Justice Society and the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice principles, goals and objectives

· Keen awareness of systemic barriers and issues facing marginalized communities

· Trauma-informed, with the ability to be present with people in a way that makes them feel safe, heard and valued

· Knowledge of community supports and services

· Conflict resolution and facilitation skills

· Excellent oral and written communication skills

· Proficient in the use of computer technology

· Experience working in a nonprofit organization

· Valid driver’s license, access to personal vehicle and willing to travel (financial compensation provided).

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $46,816.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
