Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the Operations Manager is accountable for operations of the Napanee Generating Station as the “Chief Operating Engineer” under the Operating Engineers Act.
The successful applicant will be committed to providing safe, clean, efficient, and reliable electricity to the province of Ontario. In addition to the skills mentioned above, this position will require the management of the operation of Napanee Generating Station in accordance with approved policies, budgets, collective agreements, and business plans. Detailed duties include:
- Operate the Facility: Operate the power plant in accordance with company's commercial objectives, and with regard to license and permit conditions and the safety of people and equipment. Look for continuous improvement opportunities with respect to NGS' operation and help troubleshoot issues that may impact NGS' operation. Interface with the Independent Electricity System Operator, Hydro One and other third parties with regard to dispatch, technical issues, and facility outages and derates.
- Establish and Maintain HSE Management System for Facility: Establish and maintain a health, safety, and environmental management system to provide assurance of compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations, and all relevant policies.
- Support Commercial Activities. Assist the Commercial Manager and staff as appropriate by advising on plant capabilities and limitations (outages, deratings, etc.). Assist in the management of electricity market offers and gas supply arrangements in cooperation with the commercial manager if necessary.
- Environmental Regulatory Reporting: In accordance with NGS' environmental permits, prepare all required reports for approval and submission to regulatory agencies.
- Review Maintenance: Review plant condition and maintenance activities. Request maintenance as necessary to meet health, safety, and environmental requirements and to meet commercial objectives.
- Support Conduct of Maintenance: Perform minor operating maintenance and assist the Maintenance Manager as appropriate in areas such as management of maintenance contractors.
- Staff Management: Establish and maintain appropriate staff capability for the operating function. Manage the health and safety of staff including overseeing training requirements.
- Leadership: Provide guidance, leadership, and direction for operations team. Conduct performance evaluations and conflict resolution. Support management during union negotiations.
Qualifications/Competencies:
- The incumbent will be required to hold a current “First Class Power Engineers Certificate” with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience (Combined Cycle Power Plant experience preferred)
