Position Summary

This position requires a detail-oriented, avid reader with well-developed collections management, programming and presentation skills, and a demonstrated ability to provide superior customer service. The position reports to the Manager of Business Services and is responsible for the selection, purchase, and deselection of collections in all formats including physical and electronic materials. The incumbent supervises staff responsible for acquisitions and works with the Integrated Library System acquisitions module for budgeting and expenditure monitoring. This role also develops and delivers readers’ advisory training for staff, and collection-related programs for the public.

Position Responsibilities

These responsibilities indicate the general nature and level of work expected. Collections Management

  • Manages the selection, purchase, and deselection of all collections in all formats
  • Selects a collection that meets the needs, preferences, and diversity of all community members
  • Develops directions for future collections, related programs, and practices
  • Coordinates Automatic Release Plans, approval process and other selection methods with vendors, including maintaining and updating collection profiles according to demand and community needs
  • Monitors and reviews collections budgets
  • Monitors collection statistics and recommends performance metrics for collections
  • Oversees ordering process
  • Provides support in negotiating purchase agreements as they pertain to collections
  • Cultivate communication and collaboration with vendors, coworkers and the community to foster strong and effective relationships
  • Recommends and advises programming staff on collection related programming
  • Leads and coordinates marketing and promotion of collection
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in readers’ advisory, library materials trends, selection, ordering, and vendor selection services

Leadership

  • Delivers excellent customer service
  • Participates in Library’s extended leadership team meetings
  • Develops, delivers and supports programming that highlight the collection
  • Develops and provides readers advisory training to staff
  • Designs and supports the implementation of a wide variety displays to support marketing initiatives
  • Participates in leading appropriate sections of departmental meetings

Supervisory

  • Supervises, trains, coaches and evaluates assigned staff
  • Manages the day-to-day organization, monitoring, support and scheduling of assigned staff

Qualifications

Essential

  • Master of Library Science or equivalent (MLS, MLIS, MI, etc.) from an accredited institution
  • Experience with collection development and management
  • 3 years’ experience in a public library setting or equivalent experience
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of an integrated library system
  • Project and budget management
  • Avid reader of a variety of genres and formats
  • Able to organize time efficiently
  • Ability to interact pleasantly and courteously with staff and to promote a harmonious workplace
  • Strong communication skills

Desirable

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Access to a vehicle

Hours:35 hours per week. Includes evenings and weekends in both Acton and Georgetown branches.

Salary Range:$76,934 – 91,589 annually + competitive benefits and pension
