Communications and Marketing Specialist

Term Position – Competition #110-23-020
The Town of Ponoka is currently recruiting for a dynamic individual with proven experience and dedication to succeed in the position of Communications and Marketing Specialist. This is a term position would end on or before 30 November 2024.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Manager of Communications, the Communications and Marketing

Specialist is responsible for assisting in the planning, development and delivery of Communications and Marketing strategies and initiatives that enhance the Town’s reputation and align with the Town’s

Strategic Plan.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and execution of the annual plan for the Communications Department that aligns with key objectives in the Town’s Strategic Plan and Economic Development Strategy, and supports the Town’s mission, vision and values.
  • Coordinate with Town Departments and third-party consultants, as needed, to advise and assist with planning and execution of communications strategies and plans that support departmental business objectives, and help to protect and manage the Town’s image, brand and reputation.

This can include public engagement strategies and materials, special events planning, key messaging, speaking notes, advertising, social media plans and materials, media relations, plans and news releases.

  • Assist with media relations for the Town as needed.
  • Maintain the Town’s website and social media platforms (content, design and strategy), keeping material updated, and adhering to industry best practices to align with the Town’s mission, vision and values; and to help protect and manage the Town’s brand and reputation.
  • Assist in the review and updating of Town policies; and adhere to communications processes to ensure compliance with Town policies.
  • Help to identify emerging issues that may affect the Town and assist in developing communications plans to respond to these issues as needed.
  • Attend relevant Council and Committee meetings, and Town-related events as needed.
  • Complete other assigned duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field
  • Minimum of three years of experience working as a Communications and/or Marketing Specialist

(or a similar role). Experience in municipal government is considered an asset but not required

  • Membership with IABC or CPRS is considered an asset
  • Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract
  • Able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check

Competencies

  • Strong writing, editing and public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of CP Style
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of graphic design principles and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite programs, particularly InDesign and Photoshop
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using content management systems for website platforms
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using social media platforms while following best practices for promotion and advertising purposes, and corporate reputation management
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strategic thinking, relationship building skills, tact, diplomacy and political acuity
  • Strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines

Working Conditions

  • Office-based work with varying levels of physical effort, including moderate lifting (up to 10 kg), sitting, walking, standing, pushing and pulling, reaching, driving and carrying
  • Repetitive motion of office tasks
  • Regular meetings and potential work outside of normal business hours
  • May be exposed to stress within a concentrated period
  • May travel to sites within and outside of the Town
  • Required to liaise with external and internal stakeholders
