Purpose

The Community Liaison supports Alberta Ballet in advancing its goal to support equitable community access to the arts. Alberta Ballet offers a variety of engagement options from in-theatre experiences to professional dance training to drop-in programs in collaboration with partner agencies across the province. The Community Liaison is the primary contact with these partners, stewarding each of these relationships so that shared goals are achieved through collaborative discussion and ongoing engagement.

Internally, the Community Liaison works with departments across the organization, including artistic, marketing, patron services and admissions teams at the professional company and school. The Community Liaison advises on plans and strategies to ensure Alberta Ballet programming is designed with asset-based community development goals in mind. Externally, the Community Liaison champions the benefits of dance and the arts as a drive to advance social determinants of health and strengthens Alberta Ballet’s position as a relevant, active and positive asset in Calgary and Edmonton community-building networks.

As the Community Liaison, you’re driven to create strong collaborative partnerships. At the centre of a province-wide network of activity, you’ll be working to support a vision of equitable access to Alberta Ballet’s programming.


Key Deliverables

  • Build organic listening relationships in Edmonton and Calgary with groups that represent the following communities: Indigenous, low-income, new Canadians, and others who are least represented as patrons of Alberta Ballet programming.
  • Enhance Alberta Ballet’s visibility in community networks in Edmonton and Calgary that include our partners and target partners (i.e.. governments, arts organizations, social impact and community investment events)
  • Learn the barriers that prevent under-represented groups from engaging with Alberta Ballet and report to internal teams for consideration, to increase understanding and develop strategies that both attract, include and instill a sense of belonging for all who participate in our programming.
  • Foster clear communication with Alberta Ballet’s community outreach partners, sharing regular updates and encouraging open dialogue so that the collaborations lead to positive long-term and productive relationships.
  • Lead external outreach campaigns in conjunction with Alberta Ballet’s community outreach partners.
  • Provide recommendations on best practices to champion a high standard execution of community impact communications across departments with strategic advice and tactical support (key message development, etc.)
  • Support the implementation of program delivery: in Alberta Ballet’s training studios; in partner community centres; and in the theatre.
  • Identify measurement and reporting strategies for realistic, resonant proof points that convey Alberta Ballet’s community impact (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Promote cross-department alignment with tracking and sharing summaries of community impact messages.
  • Lead the Welcoming Newcomer strategy and support the stewardship of new initiatives that advance Alberta Ballet's culturally diverse audience aspirations.
  • Ability to travel several days each month to support activity schedule Alberta Ballet’s key communities: Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, and Grande Prairie.
  • Other duties as required.


Qualifications & Key Competencies:

  • University degree or related education in university degree in Communications, Community Engagement, or similar field and a minimum of five years demonstrated experience in public engagement, program development, and activities connected to working directly with communities.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience supporting communications and/or program development in a community-driven or non-profit setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Motivated by creating and leveraging strong partnerships.
  • Experience managing and coordinating with diverse stakeholders' management.
  • Experience in coordinating events and/or event communications.
  • Knowledge of health, education, justice, and social services sectors in Edmonton is considered an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously.

  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a police background check as a condition of employment.
