POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Protective Services, Fire Chief, this position is primarily responsible for seeking compliance with and promoting, facilitating, and enforcing provisions of municipal and provincial Bylaws with an application of fairness and consistency. This position works amicably with the public and other agencies for the purpose of preserving the peace and good of the community through education, compliance, and judicious application of the law.

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Service

  • Promote a positive, professional image of the Town in all interactions and strive to achieve the highest level of customer service
  • Seek to become truly connected in the community by developing relationships and rapport with clients
  • Respond in a positive, professional, and timely manner to inquiries, complaints, or suggestions and follow-up as required
  • Defer issues to the appropriate person/Department/agency for resolution if needed

Job Knowledge

  • Act as an ambassador of the Town
  • Align activities within Council priorities
  • Enforce Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statues as they appear on the individual appointments
  • Proactively patrol the Town
  • Investigate complaints and take appropriate action to resolve each situation
  • Complete daily reports and data entry into the reporting system

Teamwork

  • Participate in team meetings
  • Work in collaboration with other Town Departments to understand and meet the client’s needs and expectations
  • Willingly take on a variety of duties as assigned, some of which may not be part of the regular day-to-day expectations
  • Work in conjunction with outside agencies i.e., RCMP and Fish & Wildlife

Leadership

  • Behave in alignment with Town values and Policies
  • Demonstrate a willingness and commitment to learning over time for improved service delivery and organizational efficiency

Safety/Risk Management

  • Ensure that safety is the top priority of the Department
  • Understand and carry out supervisory responsibilities as outlined in the Town’s Health & Safety Directive
  • Work in a manner that is safe for everyone while reporting hazards

Emergencies

  • As declared by the Director of Emergency Management in coordination with the RCMP, emergencies will take precedence. All other responsibilities will then become secondary in such cases.
  • Assist the Town of Hinton Fire Rescue and Safety Service Area with incident management response as qualifications allow and as directed by the Director of Protective Services, Fire Chief or designate

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-Secondary Diploma, Degree or Certificate in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field
  • A combination of education and/or experience related to this position may be considered
  • Completion of Administrative Level 1Peace Officer designation as per the Peace Officer Act
  • Proficient with computers and systems, database entry, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of Municipal Bylaws, Provincial Statutes, and the legal system
  • Specialized training in Emergency Vehicle Operation, Animal Control, Collision Investigations, Photo Radar, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Commercial Vehicle weights and dimensions, use of baton, OC spray, or Threat Pattern Recognition (TPR) is preferred
  • Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Successful completion of an Approved Physical Ability Test (PARE)
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours

Able to conduct shift work including schedule rotations on days, evenings, and weekends as well as be on-call.

Physical Effort

Activities related to responding to an emergency. Must possess the agility, strength, and physical stamina to perform arduous and prolonged work under adverse and strenuous conditions. Varying levels of physical effort, including heavy lifting, sitting, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, driving, carrying. Repeated motion of tasks.

Travel

Position requires responding to emergency situations within the community using emergency vehicles. Must maintain alertness and respond appropriately using defensive driving skills in various conditions (traffic, weather, distractions).

Work Environment

Position requires responding to emergency situations within the community such as vehicular accidents in addition to moderate exposure to office and shop/yard environments. Significant exposure to the public in a service provision capacity. Potential exposure to biohazards. Risk of unknown variables in the provision of services.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Ensure the Town of Hinton health and safety policies, procedures, directives, and safe work practices are followed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Terms of Employment:

- This is a full time Union position.
- $41.52 - $45.19 wage range for 2024.
- Probationary period of 800 hours.
- 10 days’ vacation after 1 year.
