Compliance Auditor, Remediation & Reclamation - Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator is currently recruiting for a Compliance Auditor to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Compliance Branch. The Compliance Auditor will work within the Compliance Verification team conducting routine audits, supporting complex compliance assurance activities on industry operations, and verifying compliance with regulatory requirements.
As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, you will be responsible for conducting audits to confirm industry reported closure spend information is accurate and complete. We are seeking individuals with subject matter expertise and experience in managing environmental assessments, remediation, and reclamation projects in the upstream oil and gas industry in Alberta, including project management, budget development, and cost tracking of closure activities.
You will facilitate audit program improvements, target selection, and supporting prioritization, analysis and reporting of audit programs related to closure spend activities. You will have exposure to varied specialties, including Water Act, mineral lease expiries, packer integrity testing, well integrity, post disposal drilling waste, pipelines, subsurface and resource-based reviews.
What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Lead and independently conduct complex audits on operations within the AER's jurisdiction.
  • Prepare audit plans, collect, and analyze information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare audit letters, notice of noncompliance letters, audit reports, perform follow-up actions and execute compliance assurance processes as required. Ensure all audit file documentation is compiled and saved appropriately.
  • Contribute to provincial initiatives or assignments related to operational needs, regulatory, and technical issues as appropriate.
  • Participate in technical teams to develop and implement policies and procedures. Assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.
  • Follow and support all planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and operational plans.
  • Respond to and lead others in handling inquiries and stakeholder complaints. Communicate and consult with industry regarding areas of concern.
What we're looking for in you:
  • Degree in engineering, geology, environmental sciences, or other related education.
  • 8 years of direct experience in completing Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), Phase 2 ESAs, remediation, groundwater monitoring, and reclamation activities in Alberta.
  • Professional Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), Professional Agrologist or Association of Science and Engineering Technology (ASET) certification are considered asset(s).
  • Experience in auditing, compliance assurance or other related regulatory experience, and working knowledge of the Mandatory Closure Spend Quotas or other liability management areas is considered an asset.
  • Experience and understanding of AER regulatory requirements, including Directive 088 and Manual 023.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, attention to detail and technical accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team paired with strong strategic thinking and planning skills.
