Job description

The Construction Survey Manager is responsible for survey layout and grade control on a large variety of construction projects, managing a Construction Survey team.

Key Duties:

  • Manage Field Survey Team. Motivate and challenge the team to collect, disseminate and interpret survey related data across multiple construction projects; ensuring required survey, data collection or preparation is carried out to meet project timelines.
  • Process, prepare, and interpret all digital survey data for survey and adoption in “Machine Control” software. Also includes processing as-constructed quantities at various stages and preparing as-builts.
  • Perform complex computations and analysis using technology and software including CAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Centre (TBC) and Topcon related software.
  • Manage fleet of survey equipment ensuring that it is in good working order and report any problems; also make recommendations in purchasing new survey/grade and gps machine control equipment.
  • Work with HR for the recruitment and onboarding of surveyors, layout and grade persons to grow the department, increasing the breadth of skills of team staff.
  • Liaise and communicate with onsite inspectors, managers, superintendents, engineering consultants, owner’s representatives and the public.
  • Drive the company initiative to grow the application of “Machine Controls” on projects.
  • Managing survey projects; determining tasks required and sequence to be undertaken.
  • Managing Schedule to ensure that survey projects and tasks are delivered within the required timeline, ensuring smooth project flow.
  • Managing costs, maintaining project budgets.
  • Manage quality of the data preparation, survey work and all related deliverables.
  • Perform quantity take -off activities, calculations, and presentation of said data.
  • Identify and propose solutions regarding incorrect information provided by outside agencies.
  • Analyze data and communicate findings.
  • Generate survey and machine control layout data.
  • Establish calibration of projects.
  • Create plans, plots and write reports.
  • Interact with internal departments and external companies.
  • Train new and existing employees.
  • Follow company health and safety policy, workplace policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Complete layout, stakeout and surveying, grade control as well as other duties as required.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Understanding of heavy Civil Construction including knowledge of how roads, parking lots, underground infrastructure are constructed.
  • Graduate of Geomatics or Survey Engineering, Survey Technology, Geomatics, Civil Engineering or Engineering Technology program.
  • Experience with Construction Surveying Practices.
  • High level of competence with computer programs: AutoCAD, Trimble Business Centre, MS Excel, and others.
  • Must have experience/knowledge in Construction Surveying – layout and gradework.
  • Attention to detail, excellent mathematical skills.
  • Strong organizational/analytical skills with clear oral and written communication abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
  • High level of personal integrity.
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to work cooperatively with other staff.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
  • Maintain a valid G driver’s license.

Work Conditions:

  • This position includes office work managing personnel and data as well as field visits and field work.
  • Weekend and evening work may be required to meet the demands of the position.
  • Computer (with adequate computing power) and mobile phone will be provided.
  • Work vehicle for transportation to/from site provided.
