Role description
The key responsibility of the Director would be to lead specialists who proactively provide consultation, advice, analysis, and guidance on Canadian income taxation implications to policyholders and clients of products sold by the Canadian division (Individual Customer (IC) and Group Customer (GC) business areas). The accountabilities of the position are outlined below.

What you will do
  • Stay abreast, analyze, interpret, and explain the impact of taxation arising from new and existing tax legislation, regulations, court cases, changes to tax treaties, and technical interpretations and administrative positions of the CRA or RQ to strategic business units, to support product development, marketing, administration, and tax reporting requirements.
  • Provide research for and consulting to Wealth and Insurance Solutions business areas on complex scenarios, product development and business initiatives. Ensure Canada Life products are designed to be tax effective and that any associated risks are identified and understood by the business, including evaluating and explaining proposed tax solutions at the appropriate level, assisting with decision making, implementing the change and any corrective action required to ensure it is compliant.
  • Ongoing review and contribution with respect to the income tax aspects of marketing articles and concepts, advanced sales articles and strategies, contract wording, applications, forms, information folder/simplified prospectus, customer disclosures, information memorandums, statements, product guides as well as illustrations, considering technical tax implications and optimization.
  • Address complex queries that require tax interpretation for various stakeholders, including IC (Individual Life, Living Benefits, Wealth Management), certain GC product areas, tax reporting areas, compliance, legal, market conduct, marketing, client services, new business, advisors, and wholesalers. Queries can involve taxation issues that affect all policy or account holders, or specific complex cases.
  • Leadership, including aptitude to share knowledge, review and provide input to other team members, as well as research and build collaborative relationships with business partners and advisors.
  • Be involved in industry committees, working groups or task forces, and negotiations with tax policy makers, while keeping leaders informed. Utilize and share these resources.
  • Analyze complex investment structures and products. Advise on investments their structures/platforms, and third party asset management relationships from the tax perspective for all phases of a fund product life cycles regarding the management of domestic and foreign tax exposure and cross border tax implications and optimization.

What you will bring
  • CPA designation or equivalent education and experience
  • 6-9+ years of related experience
  • Proven excellent leadership skills and ability to influence, guide and share complex technical knowledge in an easy to understand manner and to develop valued collaborative relationships with both internal team members and external business areas and partners, while managing priorities and meeting delivery dates.
  • Strong technical knowledge of both general tax principles, excellent working knowledge of Canadian income tax laws as it relates to insurance and wealth products; including but not limited to; individual life insurance, living benefits, annuities, segregated funds, mutual funds and the various types of plans under which these non-registered and registered products may be held (for example: RRSP, RRIF, RPP, TFSA)
  • Knowledge of financial institutions and investment products and knowledge of cross-border tax issues and understanding of tax compliance matters
  • Proven research skills including the ability to interpret, apply and articulate complex legislation to general or fact-based situations and arrive at logical opinions
  • Excellent analytical, judgement, critical thinking, innovative and strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, decision making abilities, including ability to demonstrate attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to tailor communications to different audiences.
  • Interpret complex language of tax legislation and translate it into readily usable information for various business areas, advisors and clients.
  • Current environment requires adaptability to change, and the ability to apply knowledge to new and complex products/features that are not always explicitly contemplated in tax legislation

Salary Range:
Minimum: $89,800
Maximum: $166,300
