Duties

The Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) is the largest non-military hard bottomed drydock on the west coast of the Americas and is located at the south end of Vancouver Island at Esquimalt Harbour, in the Greater Victoria region. It is a federally owned and operated ship repair facility and is unique in that it operates as an “open access” “multi-user” facility. The terms “open access” “multi-user” describes a facility that provides common services (on a fee-for-service basis) to various commercial ship repair firms and provides access to dry dock infrastructure for a wide range of coastal and ocean-going vessels. Its principal stakeholders are the vessel owners that rely on the facility for repair, maintenance, and refit. This includes the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Coast Guard and BC Ferries, as well as many foreign and private vessel owners (including cruise ship lines) that regularly use the facility. There are approximately 2000 personnel working on the grounds of the facility at any one time.

Intent of the process

A pool of essentially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within the Department. These positions may be staffed on an indeterminate or temporary basis (term, acting, assignment, secondment).

Education:
A secondary school diploma or employer approved alternatives such as an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
1) Experience performing routine maintenance tasks such as general repairs to buildings, docks, roads and other facilities
2) Experience operating and maintaining industry specific tools used in construction and building maintenance ( medium-sized equipment such as loaders, tractors, forklifts, generators, chain saws, brush cutters, cement mixers, ATV's, boats).
3) Experience working in a marine environment.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Medical suitability;
Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license;
Required to wear all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
Willingness and ability to work shift work, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays when required;
Willingness and able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Willingness and able to work in confined spaces;
Required to lift objects up to 23 kg or 50 lbs; and
Willing and able climb ladders and work at heights in excess of 30 m.
