The Raptors is hiring for a Duty Manager! This is an exciting opportunity to start in a management position based primarily at our visitor centre in Duncan BC, with travel required to local wildlife management sites (Nanaimo/Victoria) during the fall/winter. Working as a Duty Manager means managing the day-to-day operations of our visitor centre, including both our human and bird team members. Position responsibilities would include, but aren’t limited to:
- Managing daily teams of 3 – 20 staff & volunteers (numbers depending on the time of year), working with the team to ensure excellent guest experience, coordinating hands-on experiences, talks and demonstrations, and going above and beyond to ensure everything is running smoothly.
- Overseeing the daily care and training of our birds as part of the team.
- Supporting our team and providing constructive feedback to team members.
- Presenting engaging, educational flying demonstrations and hands-on experiences to guests.
- Training of new staff and volunteers.
- Developing a comprehensive understanding of visitor centre operations to allow you to step into other roles as necessary (giftshop, etc.)
- (During the fall and winter, primarily) Working with trained birds of prey to mitigate human-wildlife conflict at landfills and industrials sites, outdoors in all weather.
This position requires a diverse set of skills, and an ideal candidate would have:
- Completed post-secondary education in a related field (biology, zoology, ecology, etc.)
- Experience working with, and a passion for, birds of prey.
- Management experience and experience managing teams in complex, fast-paced environments while maintaining a high standard for guest experience.
- Public speaking skills and experience
- Excellent customer service skills and a willingness to engage with members of the public.
- Stellar interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in leadership roles and accompanying leadership skills.
- Understanding of the threats facing wildlife, our planet, and sustainable practices.
- Adaptability to a variety of work and tasks.
- Class 5 Driver’s License (Required).
This is a full-time permanent position, with pay commiserate with experience and the level of training we would need to provide, starting at $23-25/hour.
