Job Summary
The Environment Section is looking for a creative, dynamic, and experienced individual to develop and deliver community climate change programs in the city. This individual will deliver existing programs and develop new programming that will help community members decrease their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to a changing climate. This programming will be rooted in the Environment Section’s strategic plans, including the
Climate Change Action Plan
,
Urban Agriculture Strategy
, and
Peel Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy
, and will be undertaken in partnership with City staff, Mayor and Members of Council, residents, businesses, local school boards, community based- organizations, and others
.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Environmental Outreach, the successful candidate will:
 
-Lead and support the development and implementation of community climate change mitigation and adaptation programs (e.g., establish resilience hubs, develop balcony gardening programming, work with conservation authorities on sustainable neighbourhood action plans)
-Collaborate with internal and external partners (e.g., City staff, Mayor and Members of Council, residents, community-based organizations, businesses) to develop content, publicize, and deliver climate change mitigation and adaptation programs
-Foster the development of partnerships and key strategic relationships with and between internal and external partners
-Research and analyze community climate programs in other municipalities in developing new programs and refreshing existing ones
-Engage with residents and community-based organizations in developing neighbourhood-specific programming, with an emphasis on engaging youth, seniors, and equity deserving groups
-Finalize and implement a refreshed Green Leaders Program, the City of Mississauga’s environmental employee engagement program
-Organize events and participate in events hosted by internal and external groups, as appropriate, to encourage climate change action, promote City climate change programs, survey community members on new and existing programs, and/or for other similar purposes
-Provide content for social media posts
-Prepare and make presentations to various internal and external partners
-Help develop and support grant funding applications
-Recruit and supervise summer students
-Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
-Post-Secondary education in community engagement, sustainable community development, environmental studies, environmental education or related field, or equivalent of work-related experience
-Minimum of three (3) years of work experience. Note that, in the absence of a post-secondary education in a relevant field, total years of experience should be six (6) years or more
-Environmental outreach, education, or environmental management experience in a municipal or not-for-profit setting, including a thorough understanding of how environmental issues impact a municipality and the community
-Knowledge of current environmental issues, especially climate change, with an ability to develop and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation programs that benefit the community
-Must have strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and customer service skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under time pressures
-Must excel in a team environment with demonstrated skill and ability in collaborative decision making processes, and also be a self-starter with the ability to work well independently
-Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including excellent presentation skills and report and grant writing skills, with the ability to consult and liaise effectively with the public, elected officials, and outside partners
-Demonstrated political acuity, leadership, and team-building skills including negotiation skills
-Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, members of the public, residents, businesses, colleagues, regional partners, and elected officials
-Demonstrated ability and proficiency using various computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
-A working knowledge of web authoring, social media/new media, and social marketing are assets
-Some heavy lifting of display materials may be required
-Must have a valid driver’s license
-Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings, as required
 
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 65,753.00 - $ 87,671.00
