Ecological Technician

ABOUT HAMMOND RIVER ANGLING ASSOCIATION (HRAA): The HRAA’s mandate is to protect and preserve the also runs an environmental summer camp, school education programs and community education volunteer activities to promote Hammond River watershed through education, conservation and community interaction. This membership-based group is an affiliate of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and the NB Salmon Council, provincial watershed and environmental groups, community organizations and schools throughout the region.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Ecological Technician (Eco Tech) reports directly to the Project Manager. The Eco Tech undertakes operational activities required to fulfill the requirements of ongoing Projects at HRAA. This is a 40 hour per week, seasonal position starting as early as April 15th, 2024.

DUTIES:

  • Water quality monitoring, sample collection and transportation of samples to/from laboratory.
  • Enter environmental data into databases and spreadsheets and carry out data analysis and interpretation.
  • Physical restoration work (tree planting, willow staking, rain garden installation, debris removal).
  • Plan, develop, and deliver public outreach and youth education programs along with other staff.
  • Prepare field reports, annual reports, and draft staff reports on environmental issues; create articles for HRAA Newsletter and other targeted mailings.
  • Promote community involvement in environmental management and carry out environmental educational initiatives.

· Contribute content to update the HRAA website and social media including posting public events information.

  • Assist in organizing HRAA volunteer events (Family Fishing Derby, shoreline cleanup events, redd count surveys).
  • Assist in securing landowner permissions, work permits, and scientific licenses.
  • Maintenance and calibration of all field equipment.
  • Field work in various weather conditions (rain, heat, cold) and terrain (forest, wetland, streams)

· Attend meetings, seminars and training courses as required or time permits.

· Complete various office reports including updates and evaluations of projects and assistance with proposals.

· Responsible for some maintenance of the HRAA Conservation Center.

EXPERIENCE:

· Knowledge of the Hammond River watershed (its main stem pools, tributaries, and lakes) preferred.

· Experience in youth education preferred.

· Demonstrated experience developing and implementing original programming.

· Knowledge of fishing, conservation initiatives and environment and the ability to apply such knowledge to various projects and programs.

· Ability to speak comfortably in front of groups, both small and large, on topics of conservation.

· Computer software applications include databases, spreadsheets, word processing, mapping and graphic art programs.

· Proficient in English (oral and written), and ability to prepare written reports and grant proposals accordingly.

· Possess a valid driver’s license.

· Must pass Vulnerable sector background check to work with youth.
