Job description

DL’s Bins and Recycling, a privately-owned waste management company located in Saanichton, BC, is looking for a skilled and experienced Equipment Supervisor to join our team. Reporting to the General Manager, the Equipment Supervisor is responsible for overseeing equipment operations and supervising teams of operators, including operating equipment, maintaining equipment, and safety oversight at two waste management sites. This position requires excellent heavy duty equipment operations skills, as well as strong mechanical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
Yard Waste Composting site
  • Oversee yard waste composting operations.
  • Supervise team of operators daily, including managing their work schedules.
  • Direct when to operate screener, when to grind, when to turn compost.
  • Assist with operating equipment to keep things going, as needed.
  • Coordinate compost pickup for customers.
  • Organize repairs on equipment.
  • Order parts for equipment.
  • Coordinate scale repairs, as needed.
  • Manage health and safety.
  • Communicate with the owner of the land.
Landfill site
  • Coordinate employees needed on site for operating shredder, mixing incoming dry pellets, loading mixed dry pellets into bin trucks, and cleaning and piling up wood waste.
  • Communicate with the Residential Treatment Facility (RTF) and hauling company when dry pellets are arriving at the landfill to mix.
  • Arrange when trucks are needed to load out mixed dry pellets to active face.
  • Organize when to grind wood waste at landfill.
  • Coordinate loading of ground wood waste into trucks.
  • Organize repairs on shredder and spare parts.
  • Arrange repairs on company equipment.
  • Coordinate the location of shredder set up to operate on the landfill active face, in conjunction with Capital Regional District (CRD) and landfill contractors.
  • Communicate with CRD team on various issues.
  • Attend CRD safety meetings.
  • Communicate with company that owns shredder regarding any issues.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Set up remote grinding jobs, screening jobs, and demolition jobs.
  • Price jobs for grinding, screening, and demolition.
  • Organize timelines and prioritize jobs.
  • Supervise team of four to five operators.
  • Communicate with Lowbed company on moving equipment.
  • Other labour duties and additional tasks, as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • 2-3 years of experience operating heavy equipment, including excavators, as well as loading and running heavy duty industrial shredders, grinders, and screeners.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in waste management, construction, or related industry is an asset.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment, in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Keep machines clean and perform minor maintenance and secure all equipment as required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and able to troubleshoot and maintain equipment.
  • Shows initiative and works to resolve issues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills.
