Executive Director

Summary

Community Development Halton (CDH) is seeking a dynamic, enterprising, and creative leader with a passion for equity and significant experience in community capacity building, to lead the organization through its next phase of growth and development. This individual will play a critical role in achieving the organization’s vision, which includes mobilizing CDH’s research and community planning expertise, supporting the civic engagement of Halton residents, and building on a wide network of community partnerships to enhance the capacity of the community services sector.

Through independent research, community development, social planning, capacity building, and promoting civic engagement, CDH mobilizes action to improve the quality of life for all Halton residents. Working with partners across the community service sector, we strive to build a strong, healthy, and vibrant community in which programs and services are adequate to need, and affordable and accessible to all. CDH is comprised of two pillar services:

Social Planning and Research and the Volunteer Centre of Halton

The Position

The successful candidate will report to the Board of Directors and will be responsible for the overall strategic and operational leadership of the organization. As an advocate for this vibrant growing community, the candidate will ensure the mobilization of community relationships, partnerships, institutions, staff, volunteers, students, and funding to successfully engage the community in transformative initiatives that promote equity and effectively address the critical needs of the most marginalized groups in our region.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading CDH in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission, vision, and values and its role in the community
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of CDH, including resource development
  • Provides operational and strategic leadership to a staff of professionals
  • Program management, including overseeing the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services
  • Human Resources Planning including performance management, coaching, and mentoring of staff
  • Risk management and organization performance
  • Management of the physical Infrastructure
  • Community liaison with stakeholders, government agencies, and elected officials
  • Provide leadership in identifying key social policy, advocacy, research, volunteerism, and social reporting opportunities
  • Ensures CDH delivers rigorous, effective, evidence-based research, policy analysis, advocacy, and civic mobilization
  • Builds and leverages relationships with other organizations (this could include corporations and partners to optimize impact.
  • Develops and implements effective outreach strategies engaging non-traditional, marginalized, and equity seeking groups
  • Regular and responsible reporting to the Board

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent mix of managerial experience and post-secondary education in a field relevant to the work of social planning
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in progressively senior management positions in a non-profit organization with proven leadership skills and experience
  • Knowledge of social planning theory and practices, community-based research, practical experience in social policy analysis and statistical analysis methods, and practical experience with evaluation methods
  • Awareness of volunteer engagement best practices and trends
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing
  • A proven track record of fundraising experience
  • An exceptional networker and connector who brings the experience and ability to establish and build relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to establish and maintain a productive working relationship with other community agencies, boards of directors, and funders
  • A strong understanding of the importance of the governance role and the relationship between the Executive Director and the Board of Directors
  • Demonstrated skills in interpersonal communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, decision-making, and problem solving
  • An articulate communicator (written and verbal) with highly effective presentation and public speaking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, evaluate, support, and develop staff in a collaborative team environment
  • A proven track record of engaging diverse voices, familiarity with and sensitivity to cultural differences in the workplace and within the community
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong commitment in promoting social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion and working within an anti-racist/anti-oppression analytical framework
  • Demonstrated track record of financial competency, reporting, and accountability
  • A strong understanding of the changing culture of the Region of Halton and broad knowledge and understanding of the communities served by CDH
  • Highly knowledgeable in community organizing, building coalitions, and designing and delivering campaigns
  • Experience in an advocacy role, demonstrating the ability to influence local and other levels of government
  • Strong understanding of the public policy process — how policy is developed, implemented, and influenced by external actors
  • Understands and demonstrates experience in dealing with varying levels of government, government policy, and management processes
