Job description

The Atlantic Book Awards Society (ABAS) is a registered non-profit organization with the mandate “to promote and acknowledge excellence in Atlantic Canadian writing and book publishing through an annual awards ceremony and related events.” We seek a dynamic, self-motivated, detail-oriented individual to coordinate and promote the 2024 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival, taking place in early June.

This part-time, work-from-home contract position runs from February 1 to June 30, 2024. In-person presence will be required for festival events and gala in June. Applications are due no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 19.

Requirements:

  • Experience with event planning and production
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on tight timelines
  • Expertise in tracking budgets and spending
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
  • Experience with publicity and promotion, particularly through social media
  • Proficient in MS Office platform (Word, Excel); web skills (Wordpress) are an asset
  • Familiarity with the regional and/or national literary community are an asset

Duties:

  • Planning, coordination, and promotion of the 2024 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival, including production of the awards ceremony
  • Writing and disseminating press releases and other promotional materials
  • Coordinating communications between member groups, the ABAS board of directors, and the shortlisted authors and publishers
  • Producing a shortlist announcement event to be held in Halifax mid-April

Remuneration: $13,500

Tasks Description

Under the direction of the ABAS board of directors, the Festival Coordinator will:

Produce and coordinate the 2024 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival, with both in-person and online events taking place early June. The festival culminates with the awards ceremony at Paul O’Regan Hall at Halifax Central Library. These tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Programming events featuring the shortlisted authors
  • Arranging accommodations for shortlisted authors, where necessary
  • Liaising with board members on the production of the awards ceremony
  • Tracking expenses and managing the budget, in collaboration with the ABAS treasurer
  • Attending ABAS board meetings and maintaining regular communication with the board
  • Preparing a final report, including final expenses Handle marketing and promotion, including print materials, and deliver or oversee publicity/media relations. These tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Co-ordinating the design and production of marketing and promotional materials (e.g., poster, events brochure)
  • Updating and maintaining the ABAS website and social media accounts
  • Developing and executing an advertising/media strategy
  • Composing and issuing press releases
  • Liaising with sponsors and supporting organizations

Salary: $13,500.00 per year
