We Are

Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group is a group of five First Nations on Vancouver Island who teamed up in 1993 to jointly negotiate a treaty with the governments of British Columbia and Canada to help improve the quality of life for its community members and First Nations peoples in Canada. The treaty will determine our ownership and jurisdiction of our lands and resources, as well as government structures and relations. Our communities agree that land is the most critical priority for treaty.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, The Finance Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the management of HTG’s finances by ensuring adequate internal controls are in place to ensure protection of HTG’s financial affairs. The Finance Coordinator compiles and presents financial statements, provides monthly and quarterly financial reports, conducts financial analysis, records day-to-day transactions, and prepares budgets for various funding sources. They also provide occasional administrative advice and support under the direction of the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

Ÿ Maintain accurate HTG account books as required by funding agencies and the HTG Board

Ÿ Compare HTG financial status to the budget.

Ÿ Reconcile bank accounts and other HTG accounts monthly, resolving any discrepancies.

Ÿ Administer payroll, providing necessary information to government agencies.

Ÿ Create new accounts annually as needed.

Ÿ Provide monthly reports to the Executive Director and quarterly reports to the Finance Committee, highlighting differences.

Ÿ Coordinate with external auditors for the annual general meeting.

Ÿ Manage the General ledger and account coding.

Ÿ Input data based on the approved annual budget.

Ÿ Collaborate with the Auditor, ensuring they have necessary financial information.

Ÿ Manage petty cash, cheques, and invoices.

Ÿ Complete year-end reporting for the auditor, Revenue Canada, and BCTC.

Ÿ Generate external reports for funding agencies.

Ÿ Attend HTG Board and Finance Committee meetings, presenting committee recommendations.

Ÿ Other duties as assigned and requested by the Executive Director

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ÿ Expert knowledge of Generalized Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Ÿ Knowledge of the finance and accounting requirements of the B.C. Treaty Commission.

Ÿ Basic understanding of the BC Treaty process

Ÿ Working knowledge of applicable statutory legislation and regulations.

Ÿ Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

Ÿ Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.

Ÿ Able to present financial information to a non-financial audience with clarity.

Ÿ Good member service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.

Ÿ Intermediate to Expert computer software skills including Adagio, HUMI and MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).

Ÿ Well organized and proactive with strong time management skills.

Ÿ Able to travel (drive) locally to the office and other places of work.

Ÿ Able to maintain confidentiality.

Ÿ Able to work independently as well as working within a collaborative team framework.

Ÿ Respect for TTA Member Nations’ culture and protocols.

Training, Education, and Experience

Ÿ Experience working with an Indigenous Organization with genuine respect for their culture and protocols.

Ÿ Post-secondary Diploma or Degree in Finance, Accounting or related field. A CPA designation is preferred.

Ÿ 3 - 5 years progressive experience in accounting, auditing, budgeting, financial planning and other financial activities experience in a First Nations environment

Ÿ Experience developing and monitoring budgets.

Ÿ Experience administering payroll.

Ÿ Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Ÿ Valid class 5 B.C. driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
